Handbrake Problem

I got the car last May and when I got it the handbrake wasn't working. This wasn't a issue at the time because I wasn't driving it, but within the last 3 months since I've started driving, this has become a nuisance. I've just started driving so I'm short on cash right now, if anyone know what the problem is that would be a big help.

What happens when you pull the brake? Is it hard to pull? Too easy to pull? Do the brakes engage at all or just not enough? Does the handle not pull at all? Need some more info to help...

I can pull it and a light will show up on the dashboard that tells me that the brake is engaged, but it's not. It pulls like it should, but it the brake doesn't engage.

Could be misaligned. The cables could be cut or seized. Check around the rear brakes and find the cables that go to each side. They will be similar to the brake cables on a bike (steel braided cable inside a plastic sheath). Check for rust and make sure they are actually connected to the brakes. Do you have drum or disc brakes? The hook ups are slightly different for each setup.

Best guess - worn rear brakes, frozen automatic adjusters. Cables MAY be Ok for re-use, sounds like all are moving right now.

Brake light just indicates the handle has been lifted (switch under it).

You MAY be able to "get away" with adjusting the cable at the brake lever to get them to engage. Not a proper fix, for a number of reasons, but it could get you by for now.

Luck!

The brake light is going to illuminate because the sensor is located by the handle mechanism itself. Could be seized cables. Leaking wheel cylinders, seized adjusters like stated up. Check fluid levels.
When i had my drums my wheel cylinders were dumping fluid out which ended up prematurely wearing one of my wheel bearings. At least it didnt help.

Thanks for the help everyone, found out it was the cable. I'll replace it this weekend.
