St170 - Power Steering Fluid - Help Please

Hi All,

I drive a 54 plate Ford Focus ST170.

My power steering fluid is below min and i want totop it up as its starting to wine, but i dont know which fluid to use.

I have been to halfords and my local car spares neither can tell me which fluid i need to use. Apparently there are 2, one for 2.0L and one for the RS. I can already see that the fluid in there is greeny/blue colour and not red if that helps.

Does any body know what fluid i ask for in halfords as thats the only shop still open by me.

Thanks

Automatic transmission fluid. Mercron 4 or better. But that is the spec in the states. I had to replace mine a couple weeks ago and was surprised that it need trans fluid. Other fluids will work but the pump will growl until the right fluid is in it

All power steering fluid is ATX fluid without the red dye. Only Honda really needs specific fluid, the Ford will work with regular ATX fluid. Who cares what color. Mercon V is perfect.

Get something in there quick, far more risk of damage when making noise than from wrong fluid. The whine means sucking air, enough and pump scars up to whine forever after.

I have never heard a pump growl ever with wrong fluid in it as long as ATF of any sort used, but run one dry for just a few seconds and all the fluid proper or otherwise will not stop the noise after that. Whine means worn or wearing, one should always think that. People flushing often think you can let the pump run dry for a minute with no harm but not true, would you run your engine with oil pressure light showing for that long? Not wise at all. I've seen a pump run dry only maybe 15 solid seconds and then it whined forever after that, ran dry enough somewhere in there to scar up the pump. Most won't do it that quickly, but do you like to throw away money? Good way to.
