uh oh...svt problems...cranking fast

so i was going about 30-35 mph and then the car bogged down twice and then died and is just cranking real fast. the timimg belt didnt go, i ahd my father look at it as i would crank it and it was spinning so im hoping that is out of the question. i also got under it to see if the fuel pump was priming and it was but when i pulled a plug off of the coil pack there was no spark. Any suggestions as to what this is or what is going on would be nice. thanks in advance for any help!! i hope its just the coil pack! )=

A coil pack would cause a misfire. I would think. But fast cranking sounds like a crank sensor

it seems like to me when it cranks, its like cranking with no plug wires on it, idk. its weird. ill try a crank sensor though. hopefully its something small. its my Daily. ))=

Even if the belt didn't snap, its possible some teeth got chewed off and the timing was able to jump enough to cause valve and/or piston damage.

Generally, if the engine is cranking over faster than normal when you try to start it, it means little to no compression in at least 1 cylinder. I would double check all the teeth on the timing belt and then do a compression test on all 4 cylinders.

Moved this to "General Technical Chat" since the section you had it in is to discuss exterior upgrades and modifications. If you need some help, I live in the Cincinnati area also. I also have the camshaft bar and pin needed to change the timing belt if it's needed.

It's not the crank sensor. It's been a lonnnnng time since I've posted on here. I am an apprentice mechanic now. Been working fulltime in a shop for over 3 years. The reason your engine is turning over real fast is because your timing belt broke or skipped. Your engine is done! The intake or exhaust valves have hit the pistons and bent, this stops the cylinders from sealing on the compression stroke and this is why your starter can turn the engine over so much easier. There is only one reason and one reason only for a starter to be able to turn the engine over faster.

I also agree with the problem being a timing belt. Open the filler cap on the valve cover and look inside while you have someone crank the engine over. If the cam turns you know the timing belt is somewhat intact. However if the belt skipped or sheared some teeth off, the cam timing could be off enough to make compression difficult on all cylinders, thereby a fast crank.

X4 timing belt. Gurkpimpin needs to at least quit offering advice, we'd love to hear from him but advice that makes no sense and costs people money just pisses them off. Seen it several times now. Not crank sensor at all, crank sensor has no effect on cranking speed whatever.

I had that happen on a different car (not a Focus) and fast cranking is probably the timing belt.

This has happened to me as well ... don't give up yet.

The first time it happened, my timing belt skipped a tooth and was off, but thankfully, nothing was wrong with the valves. Being an interference engine, I was surprised.

I just bought a new belt, re-timed and voila ... success. It ran another year before blowing completely (well bending valves).

Have rebuilt the head since then. Stop cranking it, buy a new belt and re-time.

Quick question, when you were driving and it stopped, did you notice any black smoke behind you? If not, then your engine is still good. When I busted the valves on the second go around of the timing belt going out, there was a huge amount of black smoke. Yup then it's literally toast.
