sucking air: intake manifold

Hey folks, thanks for the great info on here. I've had rough idle when hot issue on my wife's 2001 since I changed the head.

I've diagnosed it to leaking around the intake manifold on the driver's side.

I'm assuming it was uneven torquing on my part rather than bad (new) gaskets. Or maybe I reversed the gaskets? I'll have to double check, but I think I put the fat gasket closest to the head. Anyone know the order of the 2 intake manifold gaskets?

Also, should I try and loosen everything off and re-torque? Some of those buggers are tough to get to!

Access being a PITA, retorquing after loosening using a center to outside circular pattern (in steps) would be the first thing to try. I think I'd try to get it loose enough that you could squeeze a little black RTV between the surfaces where it leaked to aid in re-sealing it. (otherwise the labor involved in completely removing & replacing would indicate new gaskets & inspection of mating surfaces B4 re-installation)

Hope you get lucky, at least you found the issue & now it's just the pain of managing to repair it!

As long as part has not been installed long enough to cook the gasket into the compressed shape you should be able to remove it and let part sit to expand gasket back out, of course that means car cannot be used for a while. I have helped that by dunking gasket in acetone to swell it, and let gasket again sit for 3-4 days for acetone (VOC) to de-gas out of the rubber and then reuse part. The acetone swell/shrink thing helps the part to remember its' original form. As far as bolt torque, the bolts hit solid and then no more gasket compression can occur anyway, simply feeling bolt carefully hit solid means it is torqued. You CANNOT squeeze this type gasket more for sealing. all you are doing is breaking the part, like so many do to the stat housings here onsite.
