Buying an SVT soon, what to look out for?

Hi all,
I'm buying an 02 SVT soon, 104k on the odometer. I already know the timing belt needs to be replaced, but what other known issues should I look out for? I remember reading something a little while ago about the Idler pulley, but I can't really recall. Thanks! Hoping to be a regular poster very soon :D

Thermostat housing coolant leaks is the other big one you see a lot. Its right off the drivers side of the engine, you can't miss it.

Also if you can find out about the history of the clutch, that would help too. seeing as how it has over 100k, I would just assume it will need to be replaced soon and count any additional miles as "bonus" miles.

Hmm, do the SVTs not last much past 100k? is it worth sinking myself in $7500?

That seems pretty high, for private party sales..
I see three SVT's in the L.A. area classifieds, under 100K, at $5500 or less asking price.
Two at dealers under 60K miles at $8000.

I have been talking myself out of buying another Focus, no place to park it; but I read the classifieds everyday.

7500 seems like alot. Not sure on over 100k though... I have 130k miles on mine runs great. Just follow scheduled maintenance and u should be fine.

That's not what I intended. Early on in the SVT build cycle they had some clutch isues that were resolved by a TSB.

On that note $7500 may be a little much unless it is an EAP in very good condition.

It is from a dealer, haha. That explains the price a little. Thanks for the tip on the clutch, I'll deifnitely be sure to check for any issues.

At Dealer pricing, I'd try to work known timing belt maintenance being due into the deal.
Having it done (and warrantied) by the selling dealer would be an appropriate "discount" so you take possession with no "known' issues....

Since its a 2002 it definitely wont be an EAP package. Even in mint condition 7500 is pretty expensive. I bought my 03 with 110K for $4200 and its in very good condition. The only way I would consider paying 7500 for an 02 is if it came with a really good warranty or had WAY less miles.

To the OP, check the clutch/brake pedals for fluid. The Clutch Master Cylinder on all manual foci are a known weak-point. When I bought my car, the CMC was the only thing wrong with it. 35 bucks for a new part and a few hours of work to replace it.
