recommended maintenance

After a bit of searching, I will be buying my first focus in the next week or two. I think I have narrowed the search to a 2005 with the 2.0 Duratec with 77k miles.

Are there any major maintenance issues I should consider at this mileage? So far I am thinking plugs and wires.......beyond that, anything I should look at?

Moved to General Technical chat.

Fuel filter, spark plugs, and air filter off the top of my head are regular maintenance items.

With the fuel filter, is there just an in line filter on these cars or does it have an in tank filter too?

Well just the one unless you want to call the in tank one a filter, but it's just a sock or a pre filter I would say and would be a pain to drop the tank to clean.

You'll have trouble finding plug wires- it's COP ignition.

You can change out the coil boots, and it is just about time for those. You should be able to find them for $5-8 each. Mine went about 80k before needing a change. I would inspect the plugs, and check the gap, but unless there was a problem- cleaning and re-gapping should be fine.

Very few people have had favorable experiences with Bosch plugs in these cars. Most people use Autolite plugs, and some use standard 20k mile plugs instead of plat, double plat, or iridium.

The air filter, unless it has been changed, is a lifetime warranty unit. Check your OM to find out how to test it. Most of us change it out for a cone filter and a CAI.

Transmission? MT's do not need much of anything until a clutch is or axle is bad. ATs might need a filter change or two. I suggest changing those about every 50k miles, but always keep an eye on it.

You're in the south, so having the correct coolant mix is not that big of a deal. Still, you should plan to change out the coolant around 100k miles due to the lubricants that help keep the water pump going for the longest time possible. Use what Ford uses in that vehicle- a gold, 100k blend. Do not use orange Dex-Cool 150k mile blends no matter what.
