It's going to cost more than $500. That's a lot of labor, and there will be parts that need to be replaced at the same time- tensioner, possibly water pump depending on design, and serpentine belts if it's time.
I was quoted 700 on my '03 2.0 SPI and it was only booked at 2.5 hours. Didn't think it was to bad of a price! Thankfully it did not need to be replaced.

With mine it just died while driving down the road, everything checks out fine, ie: fuel pump, spark, compression. I did have to replace the idler pulley, and also replaced the spark plugs, fuel filter, cam position sensor, next is the crank sensor. The motor turns over normal speed, the crank turns so not a timing belt.
Thanks to everyone for your input.
No problems @ present...car has 119K & service schedule
calls for belt replacement @ 120 K....looks like I need to save
some lunch money )
It took me 3.5 hrs total to do mine. Albeit I have a place to work on it. I replaced the belt, tensioner, idler, water pump, serp. tensioner, serp. idler and installed adj. cam gears.
Someone should point out to JJ above that ALL cranks still turn with broken belts........
