2003 focus cranks...wont start

Driving on t highwjat the car made a thunk sputter and a yellow cog light with ! Came on. Pulled off the highway and it stalled at a red light. Started back up ok and stalled again. It never started again. Some of the needle gauges cycle up and down after trying to start. The mechanic has checked timing...fuel pressure..compression...changed ignition selinoid. checking for blocked exhaust....he is baffled..and has checked many other sensors...won't start with starting fluid just backfires....like a timing issue....might it be the main computer and if so what is involved in changing it?

Thanks for your help or input
Tom

How did the mechanic check the timing. There are no timing marks. Have to go through a whole procedure to check timing.( Cam Bars and Such) Sounds like the timing belt jumped a few teeth. I would start by inspecting the belt all the way around for missing teeth.

He did have to tear the engine apart to check timing...the belt was changed 10k ago. More history I have owned this car for 8 months. Has shimmy I can feel in steering wheel only on acceleration and has rough idle under load. I have changed ball joints bearings and tie rods...then had it aligned...motor mounts look good.

Did he check the crank sensor? I don't think it's a CPU.
