2000 Ford Focus, ignition key lock cylinder, when to change? and surging?
I have a 2000 Focus wagon with 46K miles.
I understand the key lock cylinder on these cars is problematic.
When should the key lock cylinder be changed out? Mine seems to be working just fine so far.
Also, will I have to get all new keys for the car afterwards? (I hope not, have 4 keys for it!)
I think I saw a thread with the upgraded/updated key lock cylinder from motorcraft, but if someone has that, it would be much appreciated.
I also have a surging at part throttle and already replaced the DPFE without improvment. Should I go ahead and replace the rubber PCV hose that is also problematic I understand? Part # for upgraded hose?

You should replace the ign cly soon. Once it locks up for good its gonna cost 3x as much to replace it. So for a little peace of mind do it now. A local locksmith can get you a new cly and key it to your keys (you keep your originals) and it should cost you $100 or less.
As for the surging if the PVC hose feels soft chances are its collapsing when you get into the higher RPM. Not sure what the part number is for it, but its possible that is your problem.

I really like my 00' Wagon. But I've been a ford fan for at least the past 15 years or so, back when I was fooling around with mid-late 80's 5liter mustangs.
Fords just seem "screwed together" better than Chevy or Dodge and I don't think Honda or Toyota have anything on the new Fords either! I have owned and worked on some of them as well!

Hey, I have replaced the hose with the tinfoil heat guard stuff on it already, what is the other hose? Is it supposed to be replaced as well?

Note that you only need to replace the ignition lock cylinder if it is one of the bad designs. If your keyhole is centered like the one in the picture above, then there is no reason to replace it. If the key hole is off-center towards the floor of the car, then it is the faulty design which needs to be replaced.
Hey WTWN, thanks for the info, I will look into that. I'm pretty sure my ign lock cyl is original, it has a "crinkled metal" apperance but I will check to see if it's off centered...not sure about that.
There is a thread in the Ztec forum I posted in where a poster reccomended this ign lock cyl kit from ebay. It's aftermarket, but comes with everything you need to key it to your existing ign keys. seems like a good deay for $32.00. The poster has been using this kit for the past 2 yrs with no issues.
In that Ztec thread, this ford P/N is the reccomended updated design as well: Xs4z-6n664-ba

Can someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but here is my current ign lock cylinder. I believe this is the infamous "ticking time bomb" version. correct?
If that is the case, what do you all think about the one in the link i posted prior from ebay? Go with that or the OEM and pay someone to key it to my ign keys?

I would buy the OEM lock cylinder and change the tumblers to fit the key
Think that might be too complicated?
Then find a Ford dealership that has an open service dept tomorrow and get that changed
