Cleaning Transmission Housing

What is the best way to clean a transmission once you have pulled it from the motor? The transmission is the last thing I need to clean that has 1" thick of 150k miles of road grime. Withe the axle shafts pulled and hydraulic lines removed, what's the best way of cleaning the transmission? Is it best to pull the casing and power wash the shell so you don't fill of full of water? Or what is the best way to seal the axle shaft "holes" to spray degreeaser and power wash of down?

100 ways to clean it.
Guess if it where me, I'd tape off all the internal leak points and spray it down with canned engine degreaser. That will dry and remove the thick stuff. Then it's just the little spots that didn't get done well. Easy enough to hit them with a little more degreaser and a brush.

Spray it down with rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl), let it dry and then paint it pretty.

Is there any tape that has adhesive that won't become goo and loose its seal once it comes in contact with the degreaser? I was thinking that a paper towel in a latex glove with a thick grease to seal the axle shaft holes. And then use bits of latex glove fingers to seal off the other smaller open ports.

So no need to worry about masking anything in the bell housing?

I've used expanding rubber freeze plugs for stuff like axle holes before. You know, the ones with a nut in the middle of them.
