2007 with MAF problems

2007 FOCUS - After doing some prep in advance to a long trip my focus is having acceleration /code problems. I believe my cleaning of a K&N type air cleaner started the problem ball rolling. The car starts, idles and acccelerates okay till it reaches 35mph. Then it falls on its face. After cleaning, then replacing the MAF with no help I took it to my local mechanic. He said it was flashing a code that said the MAF wasn't being recognized. He replaced the MAF with a part out of a 2006 that was in his shop for a oil change, same code, same problem. He then had me pick up my car and told me to take it to the dealer because he claimed that it was somthing more complicated than he was able to handle. I picked up some contact cleaner for the connection but am reluctant to start spraying wiring connections. HELP!
