Clanking noise while idling.

My car used to idle pretty roughly (rev up and down) until recently when a sound started in the engine.

As well as a loud clanking noise (1 noise) when reversing. Only happens in reverse.

There is a clanking or clunking when the clutch pedal is disengaged with the vehicle in N. When I disengage, or push the clutch pedal down, the sound goes away.

I think it is the the throwout bearing , the slave cylinder.

My Michanic thinks the transmission is going and says that in order to fix the issue the transmission needs to be replaced. Is it possible to fix the "play" between the throwout bearing and the slave cylinder. or does the transmission need to be replaced?

Replacing the transmission won't change the TO bearing-pressure plate "play".

When your foot is not on the clutch pedal, the TO is doing nothing at all.

my car does the same clunking while clutch is disengaged, i also think it is the TO do to the fact that there is no pressure holding it to fingers on the clutch so if it is a little wore out no pressure would allow the bearing to move around more, with pressure they are planted right where they should be, thats what i've come up with for my cars noise anyways, my car also idles pretty rough but ive heard tuning can get rid of that problem

So how would that be fixed? Replacing the TO baring and housing? This is my first manual car so I am used to working an automatic.

I would first check to make sure the exhaust isn't the rattle.

Second is making sure the lower engine mount isn't damaged. Or either of the top mounts.
Find a buddy to work the car while you watch how far the engine moves in a forward gear and reverse. It should move about the same in both directions and even on both sides. If it obviously twists or moves more in 1 direction, the mounts are highly suspect.

When my motor mount went out it was a completely different noise, more like grinding... The motor was moving enough to bind up the cv axle..., but this noise on my is more or less a very faint click, engage clutch the click goes away... I'll let u know I'm due for a clutch next week after Im done doing the install I'll report back if replacing the TO fixes the noise

... and you have a completely different engine, of which I have no concern.
This is the OP's thread and I'm speaking to him specifically.

I'm not worrying about the noise on my car, nor am I looking for advice about it... I realize I have a completely different car... And I'm not familiar with first gens, just my opinion on what it could possibly be.
