01' zx3 manual trans shifting issues

When goin into second gear it often grinds when u let out on the clutch as if it's not all the way in.the shifter also doesn't feel as if it engaged all the way either..doesn't always do this but quite often..also when trying to shift into reverse it often won't go..it grinds when u let out on clutch..I pulled the shifter boot an trim off an found that one of the cables looked a bit stretched..the rubber had separated at one point or another..has anyone came across this issue? I don't th ink it's the clutch it is quiet doesn't slip what's so ever..thanks

Anyone? Transmission? It wasn't completly consitant so I didny think tranny would be it but it's definitely worse

The pin inside your shift tower is about to break. You will have to remove the shift tower from the top of the trans. I've only worked on the 02.5+ trans, so I can't tell you how it comes out, but it's probably the same.

I had to remove the transmission mount, and jack the vehicle from the oil pan using a block of wood. It's best to be in N. Then lower the trans/engine to give yourself more room. Remove the motor mount bracket, and you should see the linkage. It might be helpful to take a pic for reference at this time. Disconnect the cables, you should see 4 bolts holding the top of the shift tower in the transmission. Remove the rubber plug that covers the vent and put it somewhere you can find it later. Remove all the bolts, and pull the shift tower straight up. You might have to move some things out of the way or rotate the shift tower to remove it from the engine compartment. A thick plastic bag might be a good idea to cover the transmission if you are doing this under a tree like I do.

First off, take a pic of the shift tower before you start playing with it. You might want to refer to the pic you took earlier to make sure that the arms are in the right place before you take the second pic. Now, play with it, and you'll probably see a pin that holds some of the mechanism together that looks funny. That pin should fit flush with both sides- if it's not flush, then it's broken. It's what's called a spring pin, and those can be found at machine shops or machine works supply stores. You can also install an allen head bolt or standard bolt.

I have to re-do mine this weekend. Someone told me that a 6mm will work, but it will have to be about 40mm long. I would use a strong metal- in metric- 10.9 or higher. If you can find a nylon locking nut that would be great, but if not, then blue thread lock should suffice.

Is it really as simple as just pulling up on the old tower fixing the pin, and dropping in back in.
Im guessing there is nothing connected to the tower on the inside of the tranny
