His is most likely correct, although my idea of checking wires is totally free......

Sorry everyone, I had to take off to help my Marine son out. He has a Nissan and broke down on his way to his two week summer drill. Crankshaft sensor. What a pain in the expletive.

When I changed the bulbs for the license tag, I did put electrical tape around the wiring in this area, as I thought too that it may be grounding out. I also checked the wiring around the rubber boots. There are two on the driver side in the trunk. Thought they looked ok. Tomorrow, I will have to recheck those and make sure. Thanks for the suggestions. Oh, I noticed the directionals on the front and rear of the car are fine, as are the hazards. The parking lights on the both front quarter panels, aren't working (still). Will get back. Thanks again.

OK - on the drivers side trunk wall, two connectors. Blue and grey.

With the blue connector unplugged, nothing worked in the rear of the car. No lights, no trunk release, no dash lights at all. EXCEPT, when you hit the brake pedal, the license tag lights came on. Several of us just looked at each other, as it just figured.

With the grey connector unplugged; what worked - directionals, hazards, brake lights. What didn't work were the tail lights, no upper high stop light, no parking lights, no license tag lights, no dashboard lights. All were tried, both connectors, with the headlights off, parking light switch on, headlights on. All combinations. Everything worked as expected up front, except parking lights.

Every time I turned on the parking or headlights, that fuse blew again. I went through a lot of fuses today. Those boots were a pain to get back in. But I certainly didn't see any broken or exposed wires. I am open to other suggestions.

Same thing happened to me. Started the fun task of checking for shorts. Got somewhat lucky on my 3rd try-it was a short @ the liscense plate lights. Pry left side of each light ever so gingerly, remove bulbs, clean connection, add some electrical tape, and reverse process to reassemble. Did the trick for me on my 5-door. Good luck. Btw, if you want to be sure thats the issue, replace the fuse w/both bulbs out (and the sockets dangling there, ungrounded). Hopefully when you turn the switch, that all too familiar pop wont occur...

Tried that, even used electrical tape of the wires that were either exposed a tad at the connection, or weren't. It's either a bad switch or a brake in the wire harness that I can't see or touch. Ordered a new switch off ebay, brand new $25 w/ship. Not bad. Bought from the guy before, part will be exact OEM. If that doesn't work, I will replace the wire harness in the trunk next. No short under the dash. Had that checked with a meter. Thanks for the advice though.
