Ford Focus Loud Idol, exhaust?

Ok, so my Girlfriend just bought a Focus and it Idols very loudly. Her complaining is ruining my life so please help. It is a 2003 with a 2.0L engine. The vehicle runs fine while in gear and driving but in park and stopped it is VERY loud and shaky. I am thinking it isnt as easy as a new muffler? Proboally further up the stream. Has anyone experience a similar issue? I have done a lot of repairs on vehicles over the course of my liftetime but never on an exhaust system so pardon my ignorance. What would be the best place to start looking and what is the general troubleshooting process I should go through? Also, does anyone have a repair manual or step by step instructions for replacing everything all the way back? I am contemplating on going to the junk yard and getting one a replacing the whole shot. Is this even possible to do in a driveway?

Thanks,

Blake

I would guess its actually the motor mounts being worn out.

The exhaust won't make the car shake and would be loud at all times.

Sounds like motor mounts.

This is an opposed inline 4. With the bad motor mount it will transfer all engine noise in vibration into the cabin. I dont think your exhaust is at fault. If it were exhaust it would likely tick and throw 02 sensor codes.

Not to mention an exhaust leak gets louder with increased pressure, not quieter.

Sunds like an SPI 8 valve 2.0 liter motor, the base one. They vibrate like earthquakes, have to tune it up and check motor mounts.

either one will do it.

could be bad motor mount and a loose heat shield rattling.

^Haha I love Billy Idol! So if it is the engine mounts why would it only make these noises at IDLE and not while driving? Im confused? Have people with this vehicle had loose engine mounts causing this before? Also, I took the vehicle to work yesterday and it is an hour drive. After the drive home, the problem is almost all the way gone and the Car sounds 90% better...... Any thoughts on this?
