What to watch out for when shopping for a focus??

Hi, I'm looking to purchase a used focus. Not real picky about the model, but would like something from 2000 or up. I was wondering if you guys could give me any suggestions on things to watch out for when shopping for a focus. Specifically years to stay away from, common problems, etc. Also your suggestions on a particular model and year would be excellent. Looking to use as my daily driver and have 2 children, so tight back seats may not be great for me. What kind of leg room is there in the backseats of the 2 doors, I'm wondering if I should even bother looking into one, or if it will just be to small to fit 2 carseats into. Thanks for you input!!

Plenty of room in the back seat. Early on ,2000 and 2001 had fuel pump problems but by now it probably has been changed. Coil springs on the early focus rust and break, there is a 100,000 mile or ten year warranty on some models(they go by vin). The valve cover gasket leaks oil onto the thermostat housing causing the thermostate housing to fail. Some less expensive models do not come with a rear sway bar (that is a must). The most important thing to get in the 2000 to 2004 models is the 2.0 DOHC zetec.engine, do not buy the smaller SOHC spi engine. Timing belt should be changed by 120000 miles or sooner. I have owned three 2001 zx3's, still have one and my son has one. I prefer the interior of the first gen 2000 to 2004 and would only own a zx3 because I like two doors. Buy the least mileage and best condition focus, no matter what year. Just my opinion, others can add theirs.

If you get 2000-2004, Zetec engine only, replace the ignition switch IF the keyhole is NOT centered. The hydraulic fluid passenger engine mount has issues too for those years. That is why I got a 2005 Focus for my daughter [Duratec] engine, solid motor mounts.
