EASY way to change fuel pump in 45 minutes

Hi!
My pump was dead. I got 3 used pumps for 20 bucks (scrapyard)
I will keep a spare pump in the glove compartment.
It now can be changed in minutes with no tools!

I will also clean the strainer every year... It was VERY dirty!

PS Be carefull with the grinding cutter. Wires very close to the floorpan!

That is actually clever, but is it weatherproof?

Update from dealer:
Service advisor received a letter from Ford corp "engineer". Letter "email" states no reverse is from motor swap install. Ford engineer recommends putting original motor back in.

^^This. I don't see the worth in cutting up the bottom of the car to have some ugly access panel there for a pump that isn't liable to really fail very often. Its not that hard to drop the gas tank when its empty.

Ford did this on many of their models. The Escort actually had an access panel like this designed in - why they didn't continue it with the Focus who knows - cost?

So Bob, where did you get the dimensions for cutting, reference location and panel size? And would you have cut the hole larger or differently now that it has been done?

I'm thinking of doing this for the very same reason - cleaning the strainer. Dropping the tank can damage the EVAP/Emissions connections if not done very carefully.

I'd even take it one step further and cut a larger piece from a salvage car so as to ad a sealing gasket.

Thats nice, ive always thought of doing it but the car I have now already has it.

It doesnt need to be weather proof, water hardly gets up there unless you plan on going deep river diving in which thats the least of your problems.
The seat covers over it otherwise and also keeps it in place.

Saab owners have been doing this for years....I think it is a good idea.......you could cut the metal out and then just get a larger piece of sheet metal and cover it up..use silicone if you want and some self tapping screws........the weather proofing is not an issue.......there already was a open hole above the pump

Yeah, I was thinking of probably doing this, adding a hinge on one side, and a slide bolt to secure it. Also probably adding a little silicone around the edges and placing a sheet of fiberglass over it. Some small self tapping bolts, or if the metal is thick enough get a larger peice of metal, thread some holes, and secure it like that with silicone, or weatherproofing insulation.

Hi there!
Before I reply to all your questions, let me tell you that I own this car since 2008 and I drove it all day, and I gained 30 HP! And guess what!!! The old 2001 pump is still good! Conclusion: most people pay $$$ to get the pump changed while the REAL problem is the clogged strainer... I can now floor it and it goes up to 7000 rpm in no time. Before, never more than 4200 and cut-offs... Cut-offs in curves, etc...
So I'm sure it's just the strainer (full of sluge). It ran for 10 years, but I now have a new car!!!

defektes: just silicone , the metal is pretty thick, you will understand if you do it...

woodyg: the weather proofing is not an issue, as you said , almost no dust, after 10 years.

a_2000_se: Good question... When I got my 3 pumps, I took them from 3 Focus tanks, so I had a good idea. Lift your back seat , carpet, and look on the passenger side. (rubber bushing with fuel pump wires)
The bushing is ALMOST centered with pump twist cap. Anyways, use my picture, I was right on!!!

Ugly? : For a 10 year old car, under the carpet AND the back seat And weatherproof ??? WTF???
Go ahead and drop your tank if you wish!

It's weatherproof, beautiful , easy and it's worth it!
I hope it will help most of you guys.
For those who are scared of grinding buffers, well go get it fixed and pay!
