frustration over power steering fluid
hey guys I just had a quick question. I have a 2007 zx4 ses, automatic transmission, just bought it 2 months ago...So I checked my fluid levels and my steering fluid is a bit low...checked the owners manual and it wants me to put in the motorcraft mercon ATF.... My question is this, ok I get that ford uses transmission fluid in the power steering but do I HAVE to use the mercon? Can I use any ATF that says it's comparable to mercon? I did buy the generic pepboys stuff "proline" ATF and it says it's comparable to to dextron/mercon BUT then on the back it says not to use for fords over 2006... The guy at pepboys said it should be fine... but then the guy at advance said regular power steering fluid should be fine... So I'm not getting a straight answer from anyone and I really don't want to drive all the way out to the dealership esp in the middle of winter. So any help would be great because I may be a girl but I'm definitely a gearhead, wanting to learn to do stuff on my own (I already changed my own tailight, simple I know but still) anyways thanks! so I'm so long winded [:I][:X]

Well welcome, this is the perfect site for you, and all I got to say is always ask before bring the car to a dealer to get ripped off.

Now on the fluid, I normally use dot 3 or 4 break fluid, it will say which to use on the cap of it. But you do say it's a 2007 so it may be different. Wait for someone else to chime in and add to this.

I was at the dealership and even the parts guy didn't know...So I put in regular ATF.

the seals in the rack are very picky, I would only use the Motorcraft mercon V.

DO NOT use power steering fluid it will overheat way too easily and blow out seals and burn up the pump in no time.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, illinipo, is there anywhere other than the actual dealership that I can get the mercon atf?

autozone carries it.

Not trying to scare you into it or go by the book, im speaking from experience. My dad put power steering fluid in my focus and I had to replace the rack and pump within 2 years.

thanks and it's no problem, experience is what I'm looking for :)

ETA: drat I called the only autozone near me and they said they don't have it...

Go with the Mercon ATF as recommended in your owners manual.

Most places I've found don't carry the Motorcraft Mercon; might be a good idea to order it online somewhere or specifically ask for it specifically (by part number) at your dealership. Will be worth the price IMO.

From our 2007 owners manual (pg 218)
Power steering fluid: Motorcraft MERCON ATF
Part Number: XT-2-QDX

its about 7 bucks a qt no matter where you go or what brand you choose.

I can't find the blasted stuff, I found motorcraft mercon V on but according the manual, that's only for the actual transmission, it says nothing about mercon V for the power steering. But I seem to remember an article saying that mercon V is replacing the regular mercon ATF but is that just for the trans or power steering too? lol this is so annoying, just so one company can make more money over the other...grr
