how to program a key fob??

Hi all,

I have a 1.4 lx focus 53 plate and want to program a remote key fob. I had a 2nd key cut by dealer so i have 2 now (normal keys, blue chip) but also want a remote one. I have bought one from the internet but can`t for the life of me program it. I have tried all kinds of routines to get the car to enter the prog mode but i just can`t. I switch the ign on and off 4 times and get a beep but that is as far as i get. The red led above the clock continues flashing and does not stay a constant red......does this mean it is not entering the prog mode??? I have tried fastening the seatblet, doors closed etc but still to no avail.
I would be grateful if anyone had any ideas. Ford want to charge about 100 for a remote key.!!
thanks

that link is just to program ordinary keys. I want to program a remote one that opens or locks the car without putting the key in the door. (radio frequency or infrared). I have searched through the forums but haven`t really found an answer. :(

Try this procedure again. It's claimed to work on a 1.6 and 1.8. (Not sure about the 1.4, though). The first tone is an indication you've entered programming mode; there is no mention of what the security light does. If you don't get a confirmation tone when the fob button is pressed, make sure the remote battery is good. It's supposedly a CR2032 type.

"You will need to reprogram all your existing keys so get them all ready and in the car with you. You can program up to a maximum of 4 keys.

1. Insert a key and turn it to position 2 (dashboard lights come on but do not start car) four times in 6 seconds
2. Switch off the ignition - a tone should sound to indicate it is now possible to program keys
3. Press any button on key - a tone should sound as confirmation
4. Repeat step 3 for ALL keys
5. Switch ignition to position 2 OR wait for 10 seconds to elapse after last key programming"

I have tried the procedure again and get to the stage of the first tone to indicate the programming mode but when i press a button on the fob nothing happens ( no tone). I have checked the battery and it is fine.

Then that would suggest your remote is incompatible or defective. I would return it and try another one.

Sit in the car with the doors shut and unlocked, and with your seat belt fastened to avoid interference from the seat belt reminder chime.

Step 2Put the key in the ignition, and turn it from position one ("Off") to position three ("On") rapidly eight times within 10 seconds, ending in position three.

Step 3The Ford Focus doors will lock and unlock automatically, signaling that the car is in remote keyless entry programming mode.

Step 4Within 20 seconds, press any button on each keyless remote. After each remote is programmed, the car doors will automatically lock and unlock to confirm successful programming. When all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition to position one. The doors will automatically lock and unlock, confirming that remote keyless entry programming is complete.

it will chime after 4 turns (on/off) of the key and does not require ( or make any difference) doing it 8 times. I think it may possibly the the remote fob being the problem as previously suggested.
