Angry the neverending rattling noise...

my 2001 manual zx3 has had rattling coming from the engine since about a year and a half to two years of owning the car. It is prevolent only when the car is at idle and the clutch is not engaged. Once the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor, the rattling goes away. It seems to happen more often when the car is not as warmed up, but it has happened on numerous occasions in the summer even when i had been driving for a while. When i am stopped, the rattle seems to make an unrhythmic beat, like tic tic.. tic.... tictic... and it seems to be coming from the left side of the car when sitting in the driver's seat looking forward. I don't know much about these kind of things, and the ford dealership claimed they heard no rattling on two separate occasions when i had brought my car to them for this reason. The noise does stop.. in fact, some days it just doesn't do it at all; Is it something loose in the clutch assembly? has anyone else with a 5speed had this problem?

sounds like a clutch pilot bearing or throw-out bearing going on you. either way, these items are commonly seen as wear items so good luck getting Ford to warranty them out.

just visiting now....

Many foci do that. Most all have it get louder after installing a lightweight flywheel. Mine is so loud I actually push in the clutch when I'm sitting still quite often because it's annoying. It's not a problem unless you have a different noise, the noise you describe sounds like the same noise. I'm assuming you have a stock clutch/flywheel or you probably would have said, but I wouldnt go rip the trans out to try and fix it. If you are under warranty, maybe. Good luck

Is this another Zetec ticking noise thread?

Yep...we all concluded that it was the natural and beautiful sound that our 2.0's do when they idle...:)
