Serpentine Replacement Question

Just starting this year as it has begun to get cold, my car is making a strange noise when I start it up. It makes a whine like it has a super charger. From what I have read, it seems like it could be the idler pulley bearing going bad. I want to pull the belt and see if that pulley binds up turning it by hand or if the car makes the noise sans belt.

The question I have is, what's the best way to get to the belt? It's packed pretty tight against the passenger side wheel well. It is best to go from underneath the car or go from the top?

Underneath...sort of.
I put mine up on jackstands and removed the wheel and went at it from the wheel well.

And, here's the "How To":

^^^Also includes the belt routing diagram.

I did mine from underneath, routing the top part from the top, obviously. Its an easy job but make sure you remember the routing of the belt!

Be Careful and make sure you have some good stands.

From the bottom you just have to push the belt tensioner and the belt should just about slip off ... Putting it back on is usually the hard part ... I've done it many times when I've had to change my Serpentine Belt and my Alt .... many times ...

Patience and try not to strip the bolt of the tensioner.

Good Luck.

I enjoy soft pretzels a little too much to fit I think!

Also, I was going to do this in the garage at work. Turns out the automatic door broke so I have to wait!

Just the thread I've been looking for. Doing my Serpentine belt tonight Now I need to be sure that my tensioner pully is fine...

Then in a few weeks I'm going to do my timing belt since I'm creeping up on 97k miles.

This method works well for 'V' belts. Anyone want to try this on Serps?

Don't try this at home......
