Rear Drum Brakes 2001 Focus SE

I've been told by two people I have to remove the 4 bolts off the back to get at the drumb brakes. I tried that, they wouldn't budge.

My neighbor who works for a national tire place said I needed to remove the compression nut.

Which is it? Why can't things be a simple as they used to be

Any help would be nice.

The book says to remove the 4 bolts in the back. The hub nut is 173ft-lbs, so unless you have a torque wrench that goes that high, I would try to get those four bolts out.

they are a pain to get off sometimes...wd40 them and let em set for bout 20 min..

it helps if you use a long extension with 1/2 drive ratchet to break those bolts

do not remove that center nut!

You can get it off removing the four bolts on the back. Make sure your emergency brake is off. I have heard and read that you can mess up your brakes and wheel by taking that center nut off or that you will have to replace it. Keep reading posts and do some more research if you can't get your drum off. But the four bolts should do it. Sometimes you may have to bang at the drum to get it to slide off. Just do not remove that center bolt!

And if you have ABS, undo the little bolt that holds the sensor.

Remove the 4 bolts in the back of the drum with the E-brake off, and the car secure. Be sure to use chocks or some other method to secure the vehicle while you have it jacked in the rear. If it's a manual transmission- put it in reverse.

PB Blaster is much better than WD-40 for loosening bolts.

Thank you to all your posts. I'll try it another day. I don't think I need rear brakes. I do know I have a slight brake cylinder leak, so that's why I wanted to get t hem off to look at it. I'll have to try another day, if not I"ll go to my buddy's place who has his own shop and he's a mechanic by trade, and let him help me. I just hate bothering him even though he's willing to help.

^^ Replace the wheel cylinder. The brake and clutch master cylinder use the same reservoir, so if you are dumping fluid out of a leaky wheel cylinder, then eventually you won't have brakes or clutch. It should not be an expensive part.

FYI: when I'm not strong enough, I use my friend Mr. Leverage to help me out. The handiest way I've found is simply take the 12 pt end of a large enough box end wrench to fit over the handle of the ratchet. This extends my force making my spindly little arms have the same power as Arnold's triceps (from Conan, he's all sissy now) so that I can break stubborn bolts loose- or just break the heads off. This trick takes a little practice, and you have to learn how to apply force in such a way that you don't spin the wrench on the handle and remove skin, break bones, etc. You also have to make sure that you keep pressure on the other end of the ratchet holding the socket securely on the bolt/nut head.
