Angry 03 SVT steering clunk

Its been a while since ive posted here as unfortunatly due to a whole slew of problems half to do with idiot mechanics at the dealer and half to do with an idiot PO who trashed the car my '02 SVT #4259 had to be let go so im posting about my father's 03 SVT that i have yet to look up the production number. we bought it as an RAV. it was bought back due to an unknown suspension problem in the front. we have since discovered and 'fixed' the problem. rather the previous dealer did. a brand new crossmember, steering rack and a few other bits later *under warrenty* it was fixed. untill about 2k miles later. 'fixed' again, less parts, more labor. its now doing it a third time and we are fed up with the dealer mechs in our reasonably close area. *about 80 air mile radius* these are supposedly SVT mechanics but ive seen better work from lawn mower repair shops.... back on topic... has anyone else had this problem or know how to permantly fix it? this will eventually become my car and ide rather not own it and never be able to drive it like my last one. thanks for any responses!

I am not sure what your problem is. I am assuming you have a clunk in your steering but I need more information than that. When does the noise occur? Where or which side do you think it is coming from? Anytime there is a clunk coming from the front end there could be a number of causes...I would need more specific info.

You haven't told us anything about this clunk...

But if the suspension seems OK and noboby can find any problems, check to make sure the strap that holds your battery down is tight. If it's loose, the battery will slide back and forth with only the slightest provocation, and clunk when it hits the sides of the tray.

Yeah, I'm thinking the strut mount is the problem, but that's from my experience with strange thunking sounds that weren't sway bar end link related.

Exactly when does this clunk occur? Only when turning? At the beginning of steering wheel movement? After the car is already turning? When?

it occurs only when turning the wheel, low speed or high, or not moving it dosent matter, cant feel it in the wheel untill it gets really bad, and it sound like its way up front somewhere in the middle. sorry for lack of info.

Well if it does this with the car not moving, my pet sliding-battery theory is out the window.

Could you get under there and maybe zero in on the sound while somebody else turns the wheel? If you can make the noise with the car standing still it's a big troubleshooting advantage.

Have someone watch the strut mount while you turn the wheel and make the sound. I have this same sound, and I do believe it's the strut mount that is the problem. We have a bearing in there instead of just rubber bushings like you might be used to.
