Constantly blowing the 20a wiper fuse after this little mod

So I recently picked up an intermittent wiper stalk for a few bucks but I didn't figure on the fact that some are made for the sedan which does not have the rear wiper.

So I decided to try an expirament. I figured there's no way Ford would make a bunch of different wiper stalks for different Focus's so they must be all the same more or less inside... and they are to a point. The only difference is in the arm of the sedan wiper stalk, there's a little attachment that isn't the same as the hatch one: it doesn't let you get that back and forth movement to activate the rear wiper and rear wiper fluid. So after taking things apart, swapping parts, resoldering the wires for the wiper speed switch and putting everything back together, I now have an intermittent wiper that works with a hatch and rear wiper. The ONLY problem is when I pull the wiper stalk to get fluid to shoot out, I blow out the "20" wiper fuse. I can pull it forward to activate the rear wiper but that extra push to activate the fluid consistantly blows the fuse. I'm probably missing something so in the end all of this probably won't work. I'm just curious now to find out why the fuse would blow out everytime. Any ideas??

Because you're grounding that switch leg out. Switch leg= wire going from switch to the switched device. Whichever wire gets the hot for that movement of the switch is grounded. I'd use a tester to figure out which one it was, and wire it over to something else that you use so that operation of the switch does two things- or just make sure it's taped up so it won't short out.

Apparently you've never worked on a Ford before. If you want parts swapping mania- try GM, then you get to deal with the interesting removal techniques that come with engineering multiple vehicles using the same parts.

Maybe mine is different since it's an 05, but I push a button on the end of the stalk to operate the fluid spray. Pulling the stalk backwards operates the rear wiper. I think so at least, never really paid much attention to it. I'll check it out this morning when I go to work and post this evening, but it's likely that it's a different stalk.

Hmmm... I'll take a look and see what I can do. Thanks.
