Must I drain oil to change the filter?

Do you have to drain the oil before pulling the filter off?

The filter is pretty high on the engine so it looks like it might be above the sump level.

I just did an oil and filter change but the new filter seems to be weeping a bit. I cheaped out and put a Fram on because it was the only brand they had at the closest auto parts place. I noticed the rubber ring is thinner so it probably didn't seal right.

So, can I put in a better filter without wasting a fresh sump full of Mobile1?

you have to drain the oil to get the filter off. if you dont, the oil will pour out all over teh place when you take the filter off. so if your going to drain the oil, i would recommend you put new oil in and not reuse the old oil, even though its not that old.

as for the filter, i always use the motorcraft filter. i tried the fram one, and your right, it doesnt seem to fit on there perfectly like the motorcraft one.

well, you won't lose ALL the oil. most of it is sitting in the pan when the car is off. you're sure to at least lose what's in the filter (obviously) and whatever's higher than that, which is just what's sitting in the valvetrain.

You can change the filter with no more oil coming out than what would spill during a normal oil/filter change. This is a common practice by those who use extended service synthetics but still change the oil filter at the prescribed times. I believe Amsoil is now marketing a 30,000 mile duration oil. They do however recommend filter changes at prescribed intervals.

Your An IDIOT!!! WHy would you change the filter and not the oil too????

BWAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I have an '04 ZX3 and it has the BEST oil filter location I have seen on any car ever, EVER!!!! It is located dead center of the car, in front of the engine behind the front bumper. Didn't get a single drop of oil on any part of my car while doing it, and I put in Mobil 1 0W-20, because I care about my car and plan on owning it for a long time, and you NEVER do one without the other.

Go spend the 12 bux and get oil for the car when you change the filter. Don't be a cheapskate. I can't believe you would actually have to ask this question!!

Unless your a girl, in that case I apologize, but if not, hand in your man card on the way to the Hundyai dealership!!

BWAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

if he is running mobil 1 synthetic... then why would he change the oil. Its synthetic oil, it will alst a lot longer. so just change the filter. Sure you're supposed to chagne the filter and the oil. but really? The filter wasn't to his liking. He has fresh oil, why drain it and buy more mobil 1. Its like 3-5 dollars a quart.
