Just changed the fuel filter on my daughter's 2007 SES. It's got two different clips on it, look similar but operate differently. As you are looking up at the filter one connector is on the car's left and one is on the right.
LEFT CONNECTOR DISCONNECTING
You will see a large white center section which is actually a button. With one hand you DEPRESS that button and with the other hand holding the filter, you move the filter in and out of the connector. On the out stroke the filter disconnects. You have to fully depress that button, so if its your first time practice depressing the button a few times before trying to disconnect.
LEFT CONNECTOR RECONNECTING
Fully DEPRESS the button then fully insert the tube of the filter. Release the button. Try to pull the filter from the connector to confirm its connected.
RIGHT CONNECTOR DISCONNECTING
You will see a white center section similar to the left connector, but in this case that center section IS NOT a button. If you look on the side of the connector opposite the white center section you will see two white tabs protruding from the connector. To disconnect the object is to press the tabs together and then depress them so they move into the connector. This will cause the white center section to now protrude from the connector, Pull the white center center section until it is fully protruded then disconnect the fuel line. DO NOT remove the clip from the connector to disconnect!
RIGHT CONNECTOR RECONNECTING
With the white center section fully protruding from the connector fully insert the filter tube into the connector. Fully press the white center section into the connector causing the white tabs to fully protrude in their locked position.
Don't ask me why Ford uses two different clips.
This is from the Ford manual.
