Post Fuel pump, little box inside basket needed?

Ill try to snap a picture when I get time, for the time bing ill try to describe what im talking about.

Ok, so if you take off the metal top hat to expose the fuel pump basket. You will see a brown hose that goes from the fuel pump to the metal top hat. Some of the hose goes inside the tank, if you pull it out, you will see this box looking thing. I don't know what it is, or what its functions are for. So im asking for help trying to figure out what it is and what it does. I wasnt to delete it if possible. Im int he proccess of modding the Ford GT fuel pump into our basket and providing a "How to" and results with Datalogger to see if it actually helped along with fuel pump re- wire and possible Boost-A-Pump.
Sure it may be easier to convert to Retun fuel setup, but keep your opinions to yourself please, go along with what im doing for now.

And as always Thank you.
