Help me reset my computer.

Im pretty sure that whoever owned my Focus before me drove it like a 99 year old woman. Anyone know how to reset a Focus computer? Ive searched other car forums but Im pretty sure its car-specific.

Any help or references would be great. Thanks. :)

I'm far from being a tech, but I thought that simply disconnecting a battery cable for a period of time would cause the computer to revert to default settings, after which it would re-adapt when driven for a few miles. If I'm out of the ball park on this, I'm sure we'll hear about it with the next posting.

im gonna agree with oregon-ized there...thats what ive always understood...thats why u can delete any emissions readings before an emissions check by disconnecting the battery...disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or so...turn on the headlights while its disconnected to make sure all the power is drained, then plug it back in

yep...they'r right.....disconnect the neg.battery cable for 20 min.....before you re-connect it turn on your light switch for a couple of seconds(relieves any charge in the system).

Interesting. I did this a while back (just because I needed to clean up my battery and covers some wires) but I didnt notice a difference.

I was under the impression it had to do with a couple fuses.

Ill try this again, though. Maybe I didnt let it drain from the system...

Thanks!

If you want to be sure that the system is reset (or to speed up the process), just disconnect the battery and lay on the horn until it stops blaring.

Moved to General Tech Chat

A certain number of drive cycles with specific conditions are needed before all systems are checked & "ready" condition for a smog check if no problems are found.

See the "understanding your check engine light" stickie at the top of this section for details.

Removing a battery cable does a "reset" and starts the process from the beginning, a common reason NOT to be "ready" for a check.

Yep, the inspection guys look for that flag of not ready as evidence the owner is trying to pass car illegally. Why many states started demanding the drive cycle has to be complete. Too many people not fixing cars to just disconnect battery and then connect back up and drive to inspection real quick to try to slip it by before a DTC logs.
