Summit Point - Main Circuit Lap Guide

Many of you may be aware (I posted a notice here last month) that the Mercedes Benz Club is hosting a 1 day Performance Driving Event at Summit Point on the Main Circuit May 21 (Monday). Registration information can be found here:

I was poking around in my archive and I found the attached video. It is courtesy of King Rat Motorsports and they were testing the "Racer Eye" Technology for use in their race season. The film gives you a very good idea of the Summit Point lay out and line. Car is a SPEC MIATA. So, foci lines are slightly different.

I hope you enjoy it.

As for the guide. The write up below addresses only the track line. I do not speak to shift points, gears as each car is different.

I'll start where the video begins on the main straight.

1. Approaching the turn 1-2 complex, line up on the far left of the track surface and prepare for a late apex. Speeds are high at this point (116-123MPH for stock SVT foci). So, be sure to pay attention to the braking zones. With stock brakes, the safe bet is to begin braking between the 3rd and 2nd marker. Late apex the turn and follow the concrete patch and let the car lead out to track left.

2. The short stretch between turns 2-3 requires that you come back to track right. Look for a slight dip in the track surface to your right just before the alligators begin. A quick tap of the brakes to settle the car and late apex turn 3 with letting the car drift to track right. Come back to center track and prepare for turns 4-5.

3. The turn 4-5 complex is affectionately known as "The Chute". This is arguably the most dangerous, but most fun portion of the course. As you exit turn 3, you will crest the hill. Lift off of the gas to settle the car, commence your right hand turn in and apply throttle. Some throttle is good, full is better. It is counter-intuitive, but DO NOT LIFT IN THIS SECTION. It is an off camber, down hill, right hand turn. If you lift out of the gas, the weight transfers to the car's nose and YOU WILL SPIN THE CAR. After turn in, stay right next to the alligators, but do not touch them as the curbing is steep. From there, draw a straight line to the INSIDE of turn 5. Barking zone begins as the track surface becomes level. You will feel it through the seat.

4. "The carousel". Turns 5-7 are the slowest portion of the track. Upon exiting turn 5, follow the concrete patch through the turns. If done properly, it is one continuous turn. Furthermore, even in foci, it is a continuous late apex turn. It can be negotiated with minimal steering and judicious use of the throttle. Turn 7 opens to the "esses".

5. Turns 8-9 are the "esses". This is where the foci shine. Upon exiting Turn 7, full throttle into the esses. Touch the alligators on each side and lift slightly out of the throttle to settle the car. Upon reaching turn 9, a quick steer to the right and then let the car track left to the alligators. At this time, you should be at full throttle approaching the bridge down the straight.

6. Turn 10. This is a sweeping right hand turn that is deceptively fast. Even on lower HP cars, exit speeds can approach 90 MPH. Coming down the stretch, line up track left and look for the beginning of the alligators on track right. Late apex and late brake, but just a quick tap, and gradual throttle increase all the way to track left that dumps you on the main stretch.

Rinse and repeat.

I love Summit Main. I can't wait to get back out there again one of these days.

Very nice, It amazes me how different the cars are around there than the bikes... Straight speeds of 116-123?? Why you guys going so slow? LOL

I took a ride there with Gary Kole a few years ago, He impressed me how hard he could push from 5 to 9 ( 5 is a bear on a bike ). However, I truly felt like I could get out and walk down the straight, but he went in deeper on the brakes into one than I ever did. It was fun to see how different it was. A shame we couldn't take passengers on the bikes. LOL

Nice detail on the video screen. It was always tough to go down the chute WFO. I could do it when I raced SOS, but almost always backed off on the other bikes. It was do-able, but you had to have the big ones on that day ( balls that is ). I usually left mine at home LOL.
Speed is only a matter of money; how fast do you want to go?
