Nitrous Question

While at work the other day I bumped into a guy wearing a Focus Fanatics t-shirt (where did he get that?) that inevitably led to us talking at length about our cars.
This member just sold his ZX3 to buy a SRT-4....but still has great respect for the FOCUS.
We talked for awhile about my current mods,I am using flow thru 2.25 cat back exhaust and an Injen shortie intake....both he had done to his.
He asked why I wasnt running Nitrous?
He was using a ZeX 75 hp shot of Nitrous on his pretty much stock engine, and says he never had any adverse effects with the NOS on his car.
He was using what I believe to be a wet shot of Nitrous (direct into the fuel lines) activated by a solenoid setup.
He said that when in use all he had to do was arm the system and floor the car.
When I say his motor was stock,he had pulleys 65mm tb and all sorts of bolt ons....but no internal mods done.
Is running NITROUS safe???
What type of problems could result from this?
I have 2 friends running bad-ass Mustangs 450 hp up,and when I asked them about it,they laughed and said dont do it.
Whats your take on it?

he probably got the shirt here: http://store.focusfanatics.com/store/cgi-bin/

First of all Zex and NOS aren't the same. NOS is a company name, not a short name for nitrous. Both are nitrous companies but slightly different product (same basic concept and products just a different manufacturer.)

A 75 shot of nitrous on a stock motor is a disater waiting to happen. Even with a good tune there is a chance of detonation. I would go with a 35 shot on a stock motor, but I really don't like the use of nitrous due to many reasons. Nitrous can be a safe reliable power adder when used in moderation and when built/tuned right. A well equipped nitrous system can run $1000 and up (once you get all the goodies). Then you need to refill depending on how often you use it. Over the long haul I would recommend forced induction (supercharger or turbo).

yup i jsut spent 1100 dollars on a nitrous set up. if i didnt know the guy who owns the shop it would hav been about 1700 dollars! it isnt cheap if its done right. jeeptofocus- i am using a 75 shot as is alot of stock bottom end focuses and non of them has had problems. Turbo cars blow easier than nitrous cars.

How happy are you with the 75hp shot?
Is it worth the money?
Did you redo the top end of the motor?

Not the king, I"ve just installed a few dozen over time, thats all. Glidden is the king of nitrous these days.

To answer your questions. No adverse effects to date with 67,000 miles on the car. Now, that being said, I only runa 50 HP shot on a normal basis. I would not go above there without a nitrous specific tune in the car. I also have colder spark plugs in the car and the fuel "pill" on the nitrous is one step richer than recomended by NX ( I read the plugs and liked it a little better here ).
Bottle refill?? 12-15 times I guess. With a 50 shot it lasts a LONG time. I have used a whole bottle at the drag strip before runing in the Ford weekend thingy ( beating SVTs was fun ). In the winter I may not hit the bottle for months ( no need ).

Yes ^^^ If you look, both NX and NOS have dealer locaters on their websites. Sometimes it is a local speedshop ( thats good ). And sometimes it is just a guy racing that has bought all the refill supplies for his own use and sells it for a little side money. Check those and see if there is anyone reliable near you. I have several places near me that sell it. Become a regular buyer and it gets a little cheaper, too.
