"vent to atmosphere" BOV Q's

SO, from reading up on various sources I have found that most cars that are turbocharged from the factory use an internally venting BOV that vents back into the intake system when you let off the gas. Now, a lot of people switch to an externally venting BOV, probably because it sounds AWESOME and maybe gives better throttle response. HOWEVER, I have heard that this causes the engine to run rich momentarily upon letting off the throtting, causing small to very large backfires with varying amounts of flame. Other than being bad for the Catalytic converter, does replacing a factory BOV with a vent to atmosphere BOV hurt your engine? Also, what happens when your cat gets "ruined" ....does it impede performance or just bad for the environment??

Thanks to all who reply!

If you have a turbo in most cases you wont be keeping the CAT anyway , It is best to do a blowthrough MAF this cures many issues one of them being you can vent external

Venting external causes more of a rich stumble then a back fire and no it wont hurt the engine
