Bad Turbo?

Recently my turbo started making a chattering sound that sounds similar to an exhaust leak at the manifold. I pulled the intake off of the turbo to check end play and found the impeller is chipped. Can failed bearing cause this? I dont see any scratches or gouges around the housing.

From the filter to the turbo is spotless. It's only inside the turbo housing that has black residue.

Sure looks like SOMETHING got in there. Blades don't get chipped and abraded on thin air.

Take 2 fingers on the nut of the shaft in the picture ( engine not running ) and shake it from 9 to 3 and 12 to 6 , side ways and up and down and see how much play you have , you should have some but not a lot , shouldn't be sloppy

There is some, though it's a very small amount.

it looks like someone ran the turbo without a filter is where all the chips came from. it can and will throw it off balance your compressor wheel doesn't seem to be hitting the housing but the exhaust turbine may be. and you have oil residue for some reason.

Assuming you always ran a filter, I would check every component before the turbo. I've heard of even filters middle section coming apart and doing similar damage. Maybe a MAF part? I don't know your setup but check everything.
pasta and jwgstang like this.

It looks like the small JB WELD that I filled 7 years ago is breaking apart. I'll be replacing that ASAP! In the mean time I'm buying another focus. Found a sweet deal on an 05 ST

I'm wondering the same thing. It's defiantly foreign material damage and not bearing damage. I would agree with filter coming apart theory. Or lack of filter all together.
