Thinking about doing a custom turbo set-up

I have a friend that has a T-2 turbo out of a Saab 9 that is in very good condition that he said he would sell me for $150. If I got that, I would need an exhaust manifold, piping, couplers, inter-cooler, tap oil lines, injectors, MAF, get it tuned of course, what else is there to doing this? Where can I get the piping and inter-cooler and manifold? Any thought, tips, ideas, anything would be much appreciated, thanks in advance guys.

I went the custom route, and I'll tell you up front BUY A KIT!!!

It has been one thing after another, stuff I thought was right was wrong or it needed to be modified or didnt fit right at all. This is with Tom working on it, I could just imagine if it was just me.

Belacyrf also went custom, and I'm sure he'll say the same thing. Going custom is a BIG pain in the ass and UBER expensive. It would have been cheaper just getting one of Toms kits.

As a matter of fact I did,

There has been a few issues,
50# injectors were 30's, so I had to get new ones

Intercooler wouldn't fit (it was too big) but boy did it look sweet!

Since changing the intercooler had to change the piping, also it was setup for suck through and we changed it to blow through

The exhaust manifold set the turbo too close to the radiator (couldn't use the stock fan) so it was re-cut at the flanges to change the angle that it set at

Upgraded the Boost Controller

Couple of nicks in the compressor wheel, luckily not enough to hurt it.

Tom had it running yesterday, and there was just a couple of small things to do to it this morning then ........... OFF TO THE DYNO!!!

Dont get the T2. Yes 150.00 is a great deal, you'll be sorely dissapointed with the output however. You'll have boost by 1500 RPM's and it will start falling off after 4K...

Trust me, I've driven a T2 turbo focus, it felt OEM and kinda slow.

Get the piping from Tom and intercooler from Tom. Most of the cash outlay will be in your hardware. And if the hardware doesn't fit correctly, then you get to pay a ton of cash for labor in getting it to fix.

My kit has probably 6-7K worth of hardware in it. I have another 2 to 3K in labor because of fitment issues and some custom fabrication. I would say out of everything I spent.. a good 2000.00 could have been saved if everything just fit the first time.

Now I just have to replace my POS clutchmasters clutch.

how can it get suck though, if that happens it would heat up again from the turbo?

i dont get how that works?

that kits was made by some good guy in south florida.

We put the MAF back in the stock place, which is after the intercooler which gives you a more accurate IAT reading. It also lets you vent your BOV to atmosphere, which is before the MAF so you dont vent air that has already been metered.

It makes the car drive like it came from the factory with the turbo, once tuned properly.
