Rebuilding SVT Focus engine for turbo questions?

Hi im thinking of buying an SVT focus that needs an engine rebuild. My goal with this car is to get in between 250whp to 300whp. Im going to be doing a bottom end rebuild with some pistons, rods, rings, bearings, head studs and im thinking a thicker headgasket (all performance parts not OEM). Trying not to do head upgrades or increase of displacement. My questions are,

With the listed upgrades will I be able to hit my goal with a good turbo and a good tune? Will the build be a reliable one?

When I turbocharge it, should i reduce the compression and if so by how much and how to do so? Having a turbo with our high compression engines sounds like it would not be to reliable.

Thanks for the input and sorry if im posting something thats already been answered it's just that i got this offer and i need to act soon so i have very little research time.

Check out the forced induction section for answers to many of your questions.

People have been pushing 250-300whp daily for a long while on these motors, some as high as 450. That said, your power goals with the build bottom end will handle well past the 250-300 you want. The question is when do you want spool (quick and peaky, or slower and more top end power)? That will determine the turbo you want to go with. You'll also want to operate the turbo at its best efficiency so look at compressor maps and flow rates of the SVT engine. I'd look at the gt28rs or gt2871 (spool in the 3000-3500 range).

For compression, look at 9:1 or 9.5:1 depending on whether you are decking the head and which head gasket you go with, this will help with spooling. The svt already has the thicker of the zetec head gaskets. There are no aftermarket SVT rods/pistons, you have to go with zetec (yes they work with the svt crank). You CANNOT run zetec pistons on svt rods due to the location of the wrist pin and length of the rod.

There are several vendors and members that can help more than I can.

Im at 9.5:1 compression on mine with a GT2871 turbo, only on 8psi to test the waters this season and Im pretty sure im around 260whp range

Get forged pistons, forged rods, good bearings, Ford OEM headgasket its 4 (or 5 i forget) layers of steel. ARP hardware throughout.

And yes, the forced induction section has answered this many times, and many more specific questions. check it out!

thank you zetecdon for moving me to the correct place in the forum and thanks to everyone else for your replies. I am now a proud owner of a 2004 infra red euro focus :D

actually turns out the owner was wrong about the engine rebuild, so im going to have to postpone the engine build for later. The knocking sound actually came from the transmission. Im thinking it's something from the clutch because the clanking goes away when i press down on the clutch. I got the car today so I have not had a chance to take a better look today so i'll just do forum search for tonight.

So im guessing im going to have to get this moved once again to the transmission section in the forum, unless i can move it myself. (i'll look into it after this post)

A stock SVT engine will handle that amount of power, do pistons, rods and arp head studs, stock head will be fine. With a good tune a bit of a higher compression will help with spool, just installed an SVT head decked .040 with regular zetec head gasket. Get an LSD and upgrade the clutch.

Supercharged cars don't make the same tq as turbo cars due to the drag from the belt/supercharger.

roots style blower or procharger?

EDIT: OP, it may be the dual mass fly wheel knocking around in there. Unless an aftermarket flywheel was just installed? The single mass flywheels will chatter at idle, and the lighter ones chatter more.
