Turbo kit

Alright so I'm a bit reluctant to even post this on here but I would really like some honest answers not opinions. So, the other day I was surfing craigslist and stumbled upon a svt turbo kit for 800 bucks. It's a gude kit. Now I know they're supposed to be awful kits but I would like to know exactly why this is. There are plently of posts on here about gude kits and people go through and troll on them without any solid arguments as to why they are such garbage. I have heard plenty of horror stories about motors being blown up, but most were due to poor tuning. I know the teo4h turbo isnt the greatest turbo but I'm not looking for tons of power, just a bit more grunt. I plan to modify the kit to run a blow through map, and if possible change out the wastegate (I've heard the stock internal one is no good). I''ll be having tom do my tuning (obviously). The intercooler pipeing doesn't look bad nor does the exhaust manifold, all welds look good, manifold is made wth 304 steel which isn't the best but it's pretty thick so I'm not really worried about it cracking. Anyways, sorry for the novel I just want straight answers.

304 stainless is what almost all turbo manifold are made of.

changing out an internal wg to external is as easy as just changing it out.

i have never actually seen a gude kit in person so i can not say any more than that

Tim

There just not good quality kits , like you pointed out the turbo is undersized and is a old style OEM turbo , then gude screws them up even more with a hodge poged external waste gate , piping is ok , IC is ok , BOV sucks

If you know all this and going to change to external waste gate (not sure how your going to do that) get good tuning then ???????

If that is the same turbo that comes stock on the Srt-4 neons you'd be surprised what those little suckers can pull out. I had mine stock turbo peaking 300whp with a stage 2 wastegate.

For your power goals I'd just talk to the big shots above and see what they can work out for you with a DIY turbo kit. I know Tim was working on a (bring your own turbo) kit and toms had DIY kits out for years. With that beings said, do it right the first time. You will come to find out that those gude kits use eBay quality parts from Asia and most of the stuff has defects from the manufacture that you wouldn't even notice until you hooked it up.... Like boost leaks out of faulty clamps, BOV, and intercooler. Also, the internal wastegate set ups have boost spiking issues which could lead to major engine problems.

My recommendation is to save up the extra cash, patrol the forums for a good quality used kit, or contact Tim or Tom and see what they can help out with. Personally I have been able to piece together a full turbo kit with almost everything brand new excluding my blow off valve which was an out of box left over for $2000. So it is possible.

Best Regards,

Anthony
