Quick oil question

Just hit 3700 on my new motor, been running 15w40 dino oil. Now im switching to full synthetic, probably RP or mobil 1, but curious on wt. Its winter now here and my engine builder mentioned dropping the viscosity when it gets this cold. I think he mentioned 10w30 but its been a couple of months so just looking for some direction. Thanks guys, looking to do an oil change here soon.

whats the weather like there now, and is your motor liking 15/40?

its its colder then 45 and your motor is liking what it has, I probably wouldn't change the weight. I'm running 10/30 break-in oil right now, so far so good. But my car isn't DD and is garage kept. On top of that my oil is pre-heated.

Personally I run 5w30. Actually 5w20 at the moment.
After pushing 10w30 past the seals on my first turbo in very cold weather I stick with lighter weight oil.

How cold did it get by you though tom, im talking michigan winters, so below zero degrees is common. My car is holding up to the oil wt just fine. Broke in on 10w30, after 700 ran 15w40. Just seems like startup is a little tougher on the engine. I do need plugs so I think thats part of it.

You dont need to run a light wt oil for break in , if anything thats when it needs the most protection , I use 40-50 wt on break in just like running it normal

It gets in the 20`s at rare times but mostly in the mid 30`s so not as cold as you but 40 still would be as low as I would go with boost

Oil has very little effect on how the engine starts , If you dont have it set already then make sure you dont get high idle start up , cold starts is where most of the engine ware is done so want to keep it at about 1200 or less on cold starts
