Turbo on a Standard 2.0 Zetec? Thoughts please

Hi everyone,

I have recently 'ran' into some cash, and was wondering if i would be able to have a turbo fitted to my Mk1 2.0 Zetec focus?

Turbo technics have said its not a problem and have given me a price,

Yet i was wondering if anyone had done fitted a turbo to a standard 2.0 zetec on here for some thoughts?

Would i need to upgrade anything before i do this? i.e upgraded gearbox (rs possibly), upgraded exhaust manifold etc?

Or would it be fine as it is? obv without these upgrades i wouldnt be getting the most performance as possible, these would be future upgrades anyway but i mean for the time being?

also has anyone done this and had any problems? would you advise me not to do this or would you encourge me?

And before you say 'buy a turbo car instead' this isnt an option, also im young and the insurance on this 2.0 is only a group 8!

any thoughts/ advise would be greatly appreciated :)

thanks

Swanny

You can turbo your car for sure, but only up to 225-250 whp on stock internals. But I bet a 250 whp Zetec would be a blast to drive regardless. You will want a uprated clutch for sure though, and a light flywheel is nice if you are doing a clutch job anyhow.

being from the UK i doubt there are many people on this board who could tell you definitively whether or not you could safely run a certain amount of boost. the UK spec focus is different from the US spec focus with different engines available for it. yes you could certainly turbo the engine safely but the correct question to ask would be how much boost can your stock engine safely hold. the focus is a very popular car to modify in the UK is it not? your best bet would be to get into contact with a local tuner who is very experienced with the focus and ask them. the US spec focus 2.0L zetec can hold 10-12 psi from a turbo bone stock. that comes to around 220-260whp depending on tuning, and octane of fuel used. you guys are lucky because you have slightly more explosive jungle juice available to you than the lilly livered crap we have on the pumps over here. i say go for it but not before you do your homework on it.

hmm i woulda thought they wud be quite a few people on here who mayb had already done this? guess a bit more research is in order then... iv been told it can be done but im not the most mechanically minded n dont wanna my car up alltogether ha

would the standard gearbox manage for a while before i eventually can upgrade? other than a clucth/flywheel do you reckon id be alrite if if i take it easy on the boost? turbo techniks sed it wud take it above 200bhp :d

The gearbox should be ok with a clutch and flywheel upgrade. It can handle 300 bhp. The motor can handle 250 bhp on stock internals with the u.s spec focus. Reason we say to research is because the euro focus maybe slightly different internal and fitment wise. There are alot of people in the forced induction area with turbo focus but they are us spec focus'. You may ask more in that area and see if you can find a euro foci there.
