I'm trying to understand Turboing a Focus better

Well I'm hopefully going Turbo come spring and I want to take a chance at being able to put this thing on by myself. I've done some studying and am getting to know more about the parts and what not, but I would really like a diagram like this for how a normal intercooled setup on a Focus would look like.

If you have one or just want to be awesome and draw something up in paint that would be cool too.

Remember your looking at a Boxer Style Engine so your manifolds (intake and exhuast) won't be exactly the same layout. The idea on the illustration is correct.

Also the WRX has a Ram-Air Hood so minus that little detail your good.

Well I understood it would be different, I was mostly just using it for an example of what I wanted to see. And is it different with the front mounted intercooler?

Nope its not any differnent. there is a thread with a lot of guys setups and if you can find some pics like that and then look at that diagram it will help you out a lot. If you cant understand what something is in the pic them post it up here and we'll help you out.

^sure, if they have a WRX

I'd really bet that if you're looking at a WRX layout diagram, the things you've been reading about turbo's are misleading at best. Nothing to a turbo is application specif, though some things work better for some engines vs others.

If you really want to get a good understanding of how/why they work and what goes into a good design, start reading up on fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, turbomachinery (add a + turbo to many of them to narrow results). Once you understand the basic principals everything else sorta falls into place, things like should I use header wrap will be answered for you if you understand how heat/pressure are interrelated and what role it plays in driving a turbine.

There are some really good books available on Google Doc's and Books. Dig around and read, read, read. Find a term you don't quite understand, Google it and read up on it.

Having someone feed you information won't teach you how to do it, you'll merely be regurgitating what they told you.

the layout is right. all turbo's will be mounted in the same exact way... but it will be very different piping for an I4 vs the B4 that the impreza uses. take a look at the sticky threads in the forced induction section. there is a ton of info in there.

good luck m8! I have been buying up parts for 2 years for my turbo kit and hopefully be boosting in a couple weeks! I think if you go over to focaljet.com and look up a guy named kstyles he works for massive speed systems and he has eagle rods for 150$ but when you start building things up make a build thread every one likes lots of pictures!
