Remote mount Turbo...?

Yes I did see the other thread, however I'm thinking on an SPI (yes don't laugh, don't tell me about the $260 one. I've seen that, it'd be too hard to keep from visual inspections here) I've heard that these kind of setups are pretty much emissions legal.

I've also heard there's no advantage, lots of lag on our engines, and more money...... but I don't see how that is, assuming I can actually bend all the pipes (and get the material) for fairly cheap. I also don't see why it wouldn't be possible to mount it behind one of the front wheels, and fab up a sort of cover for the filter and turbo housing. That way I'd see it as reducing the piping and travel of the exhaust gasses, and give a bit more boost. (just do a couple bends back to a section of my current exhaust and run the rest back up to the intake/TB/MAF stuff.)

I dunno, I honestly just don't know all that much about these systems..... anyone know anything as far as buying the parts separately? like what I'd probably need?

so you want to keep a turbo from a visual inspection? lol technitians arent that retarted......if there is any different type of intake tubing and you cant find the filter im pretty sure someone would look for what doesnt belong........
and technicly you can mount a turbo on your roof if you really want to. or on your passenger seat, or in the trunk. lol. its all in the piping and lag you want.

Ok so they're not that bad on emissions stuff LOL. But it's just easier and I know it'd pass. LOL.

Edit: oh I have a great idea then... Why don't we all mount turbos on the passenger seat? I be that'd pass for a passenger on the HOV lane

Someone over on the "other" site did one. Search for it and it should pop up.

Yeah man, remote turbo = fail.

What's this in your sig about a turbo V6? If you are actually getting that, *why the hell* would you want to bother turboing an SPI?

Absolutely all good points. (and you reminded me, I gotta change the sig... It's been put off till next year, it'll be my collge project :))

I was pretty much just entertaining the ideas I guess. Just like I was with the dsm turbo stuff.

Simply put, stop spending money on the spi, and get that D30 in there (I already have a few parts. I can't and won't quit it/forget about it.)

I promise all, I will have it in.

I was the one on the "other" site--I'm here too. I got decent results with it but I did a ton of designing and redesigning to get it right. The problem is that if you use a small enough turbo to spool up in any reasonable amount of time, then it isn't big enough to support high levels of hp. I would say I had about 225whp at 13 psi and it made for a great daily driver, with the exception of rainy day driving. I did it a few times, but avoided it like the plague whenever I could. It's difficult to utilize some sort of rain shield and still get decent airflow to the filter given its position under the car. I'd love to see the v6 with the awd system, AND the remote-style turbo. This engine provides enough airflow to utilize a medium-sized turbo and make solid power on lower boost levels. Plus, the sound is killer...You just can't replicate it any other way.

Not sure how much research you've done, but are you aware of the X-type AWD F/R split? I was talkin to a guy who said it's 90/10 so the rear wheels won't be doin much for you.
