Turbo's in series

So, i had a random thought, and please, no flamming, i was just curious and don't plan on doing it, but would the focus gain any benefit from running parrellel turbos?? only thing i can think of is one smaller and one medium sized, this would give you some Nasty down low torque while still making great up top power. granted, a focus can't put down 200 psi like a deisel, but its an interesting idea!! i guess it would be a nice setup for about 30 + psi. or, similarly, could u run a twin turbo setup w/ a small and large turbo? of course there would need to be someway to balance the backpressure. but like i said, i don't ever plan on doing this, the thought just crossed my mind. I like thinking in theory, so i guess i'm looking at why this is a bad idea or why it hasn't been tried if its even possible!! Not to mention i could see this being a tuning nightmare!! lol

please give me ur imputs, the wheels are turning upstairs and me wants answers!!! lol

a sequential setup could work in theory... but it would take TONS of engineering and custom fab work to get it to work properly on a focus imo...

now... twin charging such as using a supercharger and large turbo... thats been discussed several times and in theory could do what your talking about with much less work.... only thing there is... would the turbo's output surpass what the blower could flow (if using a roots type blower) to a point where the blower would be a blockage in the intake path....

...hmm...

ya, i'd thought of that, if u used a JRSC, that air would get SOOO hot, and the IC would have to be upgraded in a powerworks, and i don't think you could use a centrifugal, but maybe u could, i dunno.

When i was talking about twin charging, i was talking about 2 turbo's, not SC, the SC wouln't help too much, at least i don't think cause while you would have ur low end, you would loose a lot of top end.

I do agree, it would be an interesting feat of engineering. and it would be a highly customized setup, something say Tom "SHOULD" (lol) undertake!! if it is possilble that is.

well... i believe F2 did try to accomplish this at one time... twin turbo 2.3 duratec... but it never hit the dyno... wwwaayy to many problems arose with it iirc and they sold it off...

there are a few articles about it though...

now thats nice!!!! i see how they went w/ the gt25 then the bigger T3/T4. Makes sense so you have power both down low and up top!! That answers my question about the twin turbo setup, but still lookin for the "in series" setup. Nice find Acid!!!

i had this thuought a while ago..the problem that you would run into is that as the bigger turbo starts to exceed the smaller turbos air flow it would cause the smaller turbo to over spool and in turn ruin the smaller turbo further more causing more problems.. now if you could find a way to bypass the smaller turbo once the larger turbo gets to the point of exceeding the smaller turbo then it might work.. maybe just a different inlet as well as the inlet from the smaller turbo and some kind of pressure switch that would allow the larger turbo to shut the smaller turbo off...... hmmm.....

ya, i would think there would need to be some sort of a bypass too, i had thought of that, but wasn't really sure. thats why it would take a crap load of tuning too!!! so would it need 2 electronic boost controllers then too?? i'm thinkin ya!

Take a look at the new 6.4L powerstrokes with the biturbo and variable vane technology.

in a twin turbo set up the second turbo would run off the first turbos wastgate that way the first turbo wouldnt over spool.
