Exclamation SRI vs CAI ..... SC's guys may find this interesting

On my LX Mustang the turbo sets right behind the passengers side headlight and since there isnt much room the filter was simply put on the turbo inlet (like that when I got it). You would think with the turbo that far forward away from most of the engine heat that teh IATs would be fairly close to ambient........ WRONG!!!!

When sitting still the IAT's would climb as high as 135*F... which we really dont worry about too much... BUT when driving down the road without ANY traffic the IAT's would NOT drop below 105*F...... this was on a 85*F day with around 60% humidity.... and I have an 23x12x3 cored intercooler on the car.

So I decided to make my own CAI for the car... I ran 4" pipe from the turbo, down between the engine and the radiator (off to one side as to avoid most of the radiant heat) and back up into the passenger fender well and put a high flow filter on it (same one I already was using)

I decided to datalog it.... Idle temps were down to 105*F and cruising temps were down to 90*F... on another 85*F day with at least the same humidity.

So your thinking thats a pretty descent drop in temps... but whats so interesting????

I run a manual control valve on the car set at 12psi...... after changing NOTHING other than the CAI I now run 14.5psi.... a 2.5psi gain from running CAI instead of a SRI/ filter on the turbo.

That should tell all you guys that run SRI's on your turbos or mainly ROOTS style SC's that you may want to take another look at your setup... If I can gain 2.5psi from running a longer intake then you guys may be able to pick up a little more boost as well.

sweet! that is pretty pimp. did you notice any difference in spool. i have seen some dynos of people running different intakes on their turbo's and the really long ones would slow spool enough to notice vs just sticking it on the turbo.

PSI is just a measure of resistance.

I don't understand though how that would affect it?

Cooler air is more dense Maybe?

I didnt notice any difference in spool speed..... I mean seriously its a V8 and I really doubt changing the intakes length will have any noticable effects on spool.... plus I did make it out of 4" pipe which should havekept it at pretty much the same spool speed.

The point was the cooler air provides more boost at the same setpoint as opposed to the hotter air.... so not only did it pick up power from making more boost it also "should" make more power from the cooler air as well.

Good deal--I found at least with the centrifugal SC's that it had the opposite effect--if you shorten up the intake tubing you will gain psi. Glad to see you found something that works well on your setup though :)

have to see what mine look like after the tune.
I got rid of my 3" sri and went to a volant box that seals to the ram air hood. Only thing I;m thinking is I should insulate the bottom of the hood to keep the air cooler

You do know that SC makers like Kenne Bell will NOT warrenty your SC if you run a SRI on it.... they will only honor the warrenty if you run a CAI on it.

I will NEVER run a short ram on a roots blower.
