Custom Low Boost Setup

Well, last week was pretty much the worst week of my life, when my car got repoed. I'm currently looking for another car.

But my friend Kayne drives a 2003 Zx3 with a Zetec 5spd with around 60k, I believe. I've been trying to get him to register on here for a while, but he hasn't yet. Like most Focus drivers, he's looking for more power but doesn't want to drop alot of money in the car. I told him I'd help out on whatever he's trying to do, and that just happens to be to turbo car. He's not looking for a 300hp monster, but rather just piecing together a kit with a small turbo running low boost.

I don't have much experience with working on turbocharged cars, but recently I've been doing alot of researching on this site, how stuff works, home made turbo, etc.. just tell me if this cheap setup would work, anything I need to look out for, and how much power it could potentially make.

The shopping list.. potentially.
- 14b turbo (internal wastegate)
- side mount intercooler (stock on 2nd gen dsm)
- custom log manifold
- 1st gen dsm bov
- 2" mandrel bent charge piping.. welded.
- custom downpipe
- #60 (?) injectors
- boost, oil pressure, and a/f guages

The two biggest questions I have are about the extra fuel it'll need and running all the oil lines. The plan is to only push 6-7psi for sake of keeping it reliable and keeping price down. Would a FMU work at this level of boost, and be reliable? If not, what should be used? Also, can someone explain the whole oil line running and how it has to be setup?

I realize this is going to be no walk in the park and is going to require hours upon hours of custom fabrication. But with access to a welder and an array of other tools and getting to make a shopping list I'm not paying for, it'll be nice. Tell me what you think.. don't hesitate to teach me a thing or two.

custom tuning will probably be your most expensive part of the kit
also you could keep an eye on the marketplace there are usually a couple turbo kits for sale at really good prices

I agree, custom tuning is pricey. Between the SCT, tune, dyno time, etc.. it gets very expensive. That's just why I'm seeing at 6-7psi on a pretty small turbo, if it'd be okay to run a FMU.

And again, he's trying to keep the cost as low as he can, by doing everything he and I can do ourselves.

not to be the downer on the conversation but if he doesnt want to spend money he probably shouldnt be going turbo.... maybe start piecing stuff together and save until he can do it right...

No FMU will only work with a return fuel system , You need to address Fual and Timing both you cant just add extra fuel and expect it to be right

if your only looking for 6 to 7 psi on a turbo that would equal roughly (note roughly) 60 to 70hp why not watch the thread for a used jrsc with big boost kit?
that would include tuning and you'd make roughly the same hp levels

I dont agree , HP would be the same but TQ would be almost stock , move forward with the turbo you will be much happier

jrsc for the Focus was a POS and just short of worthless , they still tell people that the black box is proper tuning

Honestly, a JRSC/BBK may be the way to go, but he's only 18 and doesn't have $1500+ to drop on boost. But what he does have is fabrication skills and hopes to peice a kit together for around $500. Cheap? Hell yea, but I believe it can be done by using used parts and fabricating everything that we can.
