Exclamation Rod/Piston balancing revue

When I rebuilt the SVT this last time I decided to go ahead and balance the rods and pistons... basically I was board and didnt have anything else to do.

I went and bought a jewelers scale that will measure down to 0.1 grams and set out to see what I could do.

First I weighed all of the pistons and marked them with their weights, then I weighed the rods and next the wristpins.

I did NOT adjust the weight of the pins or rods... what I did was I lightened the pistons all within 0.1-0.2 grams of each other then I mix and match them with the rods and wristpins until they all came out weighing the same. Once I was done I could put one set on the scales, set the tare weight, and then when I placed each remaining set on the scales they would show the difference in weight.... well they all came up 0.0 which means that the are LESS than 0.1 grams difference in weight.

I always thought the rods/pistons were pretty close but after balancing everything and driving the car... all I can say is "WOW" theres a big difference on how it feels.

When driving up the road under hard accelleration you HEAR the turbo and the car goes faster but you cant feel ANY vibration coming from the engine!!!

I have all 3 VF mounts and I did not put the stiffy back on and still there is no vibration, none at idle.... none at cruise... and none during accelleration... its just so smooth.

I really have to suggest getting your rods/pistons balanced to anyone that is currently building a motor.... it just feels so much better.

Sorry, dumb question: how did you go about "lightening" your pistons?

Its a butt dyno thing if you felt anything , the factory stuff is close enough that would wouldnt feel the diff. even if it was off a little bit

Altho I do agree that every enging built does need to be balanced BUT if your not going to balance it all (complete rotating assy) its kinda worthless to just do part of it

I don't think he was messing with you man. I was wondering the same thing.
How you you lighten them? do you go at them with a file somewhere? If so where?
I think that's what he meant.
