Thumbs up SMS Fabrication new Zetec Turbo kit

I know everyone with a zetec will be happy to hear that SMS Fabrication in Monroe, Michigan is in the process of testing their new turbo kit. They are using my car as a prototype to insure everything fits perfectly and to get some dyno numbers, videos, driving impressions, photos....etc

The plan is for my 2001 to be fitted with their stage 1 kit consisting of GT28R aka 2560R, Tial 38mm Wastegate, Tial 50mm BOV, Blow through in 3in Housing, Precision 500hp Intercooler w/ custom endtanks, and using a custom log style manifold. Their Stage 2 kit would include a tubular manifold and the turbo of your choice.

In addition to the items in the kit I have added a Torsen LSD and ClutchMasters FX600 twin disk to get the power to the ground and to bullet proof the tranny. SMS will also be building me a 3" turbo back exhaust. I provided SMS with, a CFM 65mm throttle body, 2000 intake manifold, 180 degree t-stat, lakewood traction bars, AEM UEGO, Eboost 2.... etc. The car will be tuned using Xcal 2 for both 93 octane and race gas. Hopefully there should be some numbers to post in a week or so as I'm sure Drew and Jeff at SMS are going to be working like crazy this week to get everything set up.

I'm sure they'd like to see if there's interest in these kits. Obviously they'd work out being a sponsor if there is sufficient interest in order to sell them here.

I'll post up as things happen and I imagine SMS will as well.

Personally, I'd like to ~ double up on the stock numbers while maintaining the stock internals for now so around 240-260hp at the wheels. Possibly a little optimistic, but I've spoken with SMS and they feel it shouldn't be a problem.

Over the winter we will hopefully be building the engine to handle more boost, going with a larger turbo (gt3071R possibly), and going to a tubular manifold.

Well, Since i'm their 1st turbo kit customer and they're using my car in the promotions stuff I'm getting everything done at cost; so the turbo kit and exhaust are quite reasonable especially since it includes installation - less then i've seen any reputable kit being sold for, but I don't really want to say how much. Not sure how they would feel about people knowing exactly what "cost" was when it comes time to sell the kit you know? Still, even at cost it is NOT free by any stretch of the imagination. The most expensive pieces have been the extras. Even gotten at a discount the clutch and flywheel were pricey, eboost2 isn't cheap, tuning time on the dyno will be a few hundred bucks, Xcal the same way..... I think even at cost I have a depressing amount invested, but it will be done right. No cheap parts, no hack jobs.

I can tell you this much, with just a 65mm TB, a cat back, and that ultra lite FX600 clutch\flywheel the car revs almost like a sport bike. I can't wait to try it out with the 3" turbo back and boost.

It is a bit. But given that it includes a lite weight flywheel as part of the package plus the discount available ($400 + off over MSRP) on it it wasn't really more expensive then going with any other choice. Also, SMS had heard many good things about the new twin disk series from Massive so we thought we'd give it a shot to see if it was as good as the rumor said. So far I have to say that once I realized how little clutch movement it required it has been an impressive piece of kit. Personally, I'd like to have a little less chatter, but on the whole it's a nice piece.

SMS is Spooling Motor Sports out of Monroe Michigan.
