Can't Decide: Focus ST or Mustang GT

There is exactly a $10,000 difference between the 2 cars. I am interested in a 5-speed manual daily driver for highway and local driving. I don't intend to perform any modifications or drag race on the 1/4 mile. I want the car that is the most reliable , has high build quality, and is the most hospitable for daily driving (spoiled by my 2000 Crown Vic).

I've found about 5-6 common problems with 2005-2006 Mustang GTs and I am pretty sure Ford will port over those problems to the 2007 Mustang GT:
1). Slow fuel fill (TSB Fix: New gas tank, possibly larger vent valve)
2). Hood dances at highway speeds due to aerodynamics
3). Snap, crackle, and pop while turning
4). Rear end howl
5). Dash rattle
6). Driveline vibrations

What type of problems should I expect with the 2007 Focus ST?

The big thing to look at is mileage

I say you should go with the focus. It's a nice smooth ride (as long as you don't lower it too much), better gas mileage, and insurance will most likely be more reasonable.

Good grief, I hope that every Mustang doesn't have those problems.

I wouldn't expect any problems at all. Most ST owners- regardless of modding- have not had any issues other than they can't afford a turbo.. LOL. I think the only immediate problem with the Focus would be the possibility of having warped rotors that cause the car to shake slightly at high speeds and wear down the pads quicker than normal. Does the Mustang have a 100k mile powertrain warranty standard?

Neither car is going to ride like the Crown Vic. I'd save it for long (5 hr +) highway trips, although my wagon is not uncomfortable and with the lumbar seats it would be so much nicer!!

Actually gas mileage isn't a big concern since I drive 6000 miles a year. My 2000 Crown Vic gets 11-13 mpg city, 19-20 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. It has "horrible" gas mileage but I don't spend a whole lot on gas money. Just for argument's sake, I could live with the Mustang GT's gas mileage.

How is the ride quality on the stock Focus ST? I don't intend to lower the car or do any modifications (maybe get new shocks in the future since I have never had OEM factory shocks last more than 1 year). Is it rough over bumps and uneven surfaces?

A co-worker has a 2005 GT with the snap crackle and pop, dash rattle, and slow fuel fill. I've read about 2006s with the same problem, and I thought I saw a few reports that the problems still exist with 2007s.

Tell me more about the warped rotors... Is it because they were torqued by impact guns at the dealerships or is it because of a design flaw or cheap rotors? I always use a torque wrench and manually torque each lugnut.

im not sure if my parents 06 mustang crackle and pops. but it is a very nice car. if you get the mustang then you will have little money left to do anything. if you get the focus then you have $10,000 to mess around with.

ive driven a few 05+ mustangs and i havent experienced the snap crackle pop, but maybe it happens after it wears in. But if you want a mustang i say go with it especially if you can afford it, the st is nice but i really dont think its any special and definitly not a svt replacement, sure you can mod it to be awesome but we talking stock here. Im a die hard mustang fan and would love to own one, i would assume those problems would of been fixed for most of the 06's and certainly the 07s, but have ford fix all that stuff before you take the car home.

Ford hasn't been able to fix the problems in many of the 06 GTs. One guy has had his car back/forth to the dealer about 3-4 times to no avail.

My mom has an 05 st, I like it. It's got some get-up-and go for a 4 cylinder. It's a really nice car. While my dad has an 06 mustang gt, and it is equally nice, with quite a bit more power. If you have the mony to spend, go with the mustang gt. It's an awesome ride.
