Can anyone help with some general speeds in each gear.....?

If that makes any sense at all!

I just recently bought a 02 Focus LX Sedan. It's my first manual transmission, and lucky me, my car doesn't have a trachometer.

So, I'm wondering if anyone could give me just a very general idea about what speeds correspond with what gear for my model? I know every car is different, and I also know to listen to my engine. It's just, I find that unless I am at the total extremes in gear (either completely lagging or screaming) my car always sounds like it's laboring, so it's hard to tell if I'm a few km under or over and if it would be better to shift. And that shifting light is a bit of a joke it seems, so I try to just ignore it.

Clear as mud?

If anyone could just give me a rough idea that would be great. Something along the lines of
0 - 20 km 1st gear
20 - 40 km 2nd gear

and I can figure it out in miles if there aren't any Canadians to help me out.

Thanks!

Hey, if you give me your gear ratios, final drive ratio, tire size, and redline, I could tell you almost exactly in mph.

HA! I wish.........I don't even know what half that stuff is!

I'm pretty car illiterate. I've never learned anything besides that basics because my dad is a mechanic, so I've always gotten him to deal with most everything car related for me.

Would I be able to find any of that stuff in my user manual? Or how would I go finding it out elsewhere?

you would have to probably do a google search on the stuff individually.

i can tell you in MPH

1st 0-30(30 is about 5000rpms)
2nd 30-50 (again about 5000 rpms)
3rd 50-80(5000 revs again, if you're not trying to pass or accelerate really fast i suggest you shift earlier)
4th goes all the way to your 108 speed Gov,
5th is a nice cruising gear at the top of your box

these are not shift points that i recomend! they are more towards the redline of things, DO NOT shitft at those speeds when you're getting the car warmed up, i suggest 0-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80 for warm up shift points. You can actually push the car to about 6k with little ill effect, but i don't recomend this A) because your horsepower tops out like at 5300 revs, and B)why risk damage to your engine at those speeds when you don't need to. Also when just doing your daily commute, try to shift at lower speeds as well, its just less hard on the engine, i often pound my car through the gears shifting at like 5.5K but i know its not good for it, i'm an abusive SPI owner. anyways good look, and the shift light that comes with your car while it may seem useful, your car feels like it has no power at those shift points, not fun when you're in fast moving traffic

hope that helps
