Front side airbags - worth it or not?

How many opted to get a Focus with the side airbags? Are they really worth it? How much do they drop the insurance premium?

I have a 2002 SVTF with side airbags and my insurance company does not give me a discount for them. They are, however, discounting me for the front Driver and Passenger airbags. So if you looking to save money on insurance, side airbags aren't going to help out. Have you taken a defensive driving course? If not, you should consider it. That would be more beneficial towards savings on your car insurance.

So ultimately, what you could do is get a Focus with side airbags and take a defensive driving course, while saving money on your car insurance and providing yourself with extra safety.

Sorry for the rant, just my experience with the non-existant "side" airbag savings. By the way, I have Progressive insurance in New York State.

If I remember correctly on the window sticker on the ST, I think they were only like 350 bucks.. I think that is way woth the extra safety IMO... and no I have Geico and they do not lower your insurance premiums for the side airbags but I say get them for the extra safety...

1) I have the side airbags,

2) I don't think it affected my insurance premium at all,

3) Wheter it's worth it all depends...

Seriously, you have to do your own cost benefit evaluation -- I went ahead and got them since the Focus is a smaller car and is generally less safe in a side impact as a result (compared to vehicles like my Explorer.)

http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=280

http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/testing/ncap/Index2.cfm

Neither NHTSA nor IIHS have tested a Focus with a side airbag, so there are no quantitative figures to document the benefit. (Which I find odd as, while I can see it is a costly test, you would think both NHTSA and the IIHS would want to document the benefits of Side AIr bags. I believe their rationale is to test only what is standard, not option, to give the manufacturers and incentive to make safety features standard).

So, are side bags worth it? Well,, I haven't had a car accident in which any type of air bag would have helped me since 1974, so I guess, strictly speaking, air bags of any type have had no value to me at all so far. But in my case, I generally keep a car for ten years or so, meaning that having the extra safety that side airbags in the focus provide costs me about $35 a year, or less than $3 a month.

As an older motorcyclist I can remember the Bell helmet ads in the 1970s (back when Bell helmets were the best) that simply said, "If you have a $10 head buy a $10 Helmet."

Or, as a famous helmet safety researcher once said, "Tell me what kind of accident you are going to have, and I'll tell you what the best helmet is." Side air bags are similar in that if you can tell us what kind of accident you are going to have, we can tell you whether the side air bags are worth it or not.

I have them, they weren't on my list while buying the car but Im glad I have that as well as ABS. Id go for them, you never know what will happen so extra safety is a good thing. They haven't lowered my insurance though.

I did not consider it a deal breaker, as I've never had a car with side airbags before, but I really wanted them. I consider them fully worth it.

Seeing how many idiotic drivers there are, and how many of them drive SUV's, trucks, vans (any vehicle bigger than a Focus, which is alot of cars) I would highly recommend side airbags for us. My life is definetly worth a couple extra bucks.
