Thanks Man....

He has the following codes:

PO 325 - Knock sensor
PO 401 - I know this one is the DPFE...just replaced it on my SE
PO 420 - Cat?

He took it to some rip-off place that said he needed tranny work...so I'm trying to help him out

dude, i'd ask someone like b16sir1991. he lives in kannapolis, but he has a Ford dealer network access, he can probably look up reccomended bodyshops.

also, ZX3chick, i think she lives in VA, though it may be WV now that i think of it.

i know there are people on her from Leesburg.

sorry i can be of more help, but i'm in MI, and havent been in VA for several years.

first one i would think about changing the knock sensor but it should be tested first to see if it is actually bad.

second is the DPFE like you said. It almost always is this problem.

third sounds like the bank 1 Cat is trashed or the downstream 02 sensor is not switching at all but that should throw some code for itself. I would vote for a bad cat. the y-pipe is not cheap and good luck pulling one from the junk yard because most don't let you take catalytic convertors.

I think his first step is to replace the DPFE...60 bucks and i looked at the setup online...looks even easier than a focus if that's possible

I don't know what they're charging for cat replacements at a midas etc....shoot if it was me...if it's 200 bucks...I'd just slap a random technology hi-flo on there...

How do they test the knock sensor?

I've owned a Taurus and spent a lot of time working on them. What engine does your friend have? The Vulcan (OHV), Duratec (DOHC), or the Yamaha SHO engine?

The DPFE is a pretty simple fix. I believe it's right on top on both the Vulcan and Duratec. I'd replace that first.

The knock sensor might be going bad, but you can't exactly test it AFAIK. If it's throwing a code, either the sensor is bad, the connections are dirty and have corrosion, or your engine is knocking from detonation. More than likely the sensor is going bad so it's going to throw a code. So when the sensor is bad, it's normally assuming the engine is knocking, so the ECU will change the timing and run a "safer setup" of retarded timing to help reduce knocking; which in turn makes the engine run worse and you lose quite a bit of power.

As far as your PO420 code, it is possible that since the knock sensor is screwing up and making the engine retard it's timing, that it is also throwing that code as well. That code indicates that the catalytic convertor/system isn't running efficiently. So I would get that knock sensor replaced. Also, if the O2 sensors haven't been replaced, replace those as well. A O2 sensor that isn't reading properly will also throw that code.

Hope that helps a bit.

I had a 99 with the Vulcan. Good cars. Anyway I had a problem with my CATs they were makeing a loud clicking noise under a load/acceleration luckily my car had only 66000mi on it in 05 and the emissions warranty paid for it all.

Here's a link to a popular Taurus web site: www.tauruscarclub.com

Thanks for the suggestions...he ended up having the shop that tried to rip him off (they said it was a $3500 tranny issue) do the work...don't ask me why

They replaced the cat and changed out the two sensors...it appears to be running fine
