Unhappy Cougar Ace Mishap?!

Has anyone heard about this? A ship carrying Mazda cars, including CX-7 and Mazda3 had a little problem at sea:

http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/news/ma...new-199992.php

Mazda released a statement yesterday indicating that vehicles aboard the fubar'd car-carrying ship, Cougar Ace will not be sold at dealerships as new. But -- and here's ther part where you feel around for your wallet -- repairable cars would be "made available for sale as used cars through Mazda's dealer network in the U.S. and Canada." Of course, that doesn't mean the company will sell damaged goods, but it does likely mean the factory warranty won't be in effect. Still, for transparency's sake, the company is listing VINs of all affected cars on www.mazdausa.com and,www.mazda.ca. For all of those interested in buying one of the salvaged Mazda3s or CX-7s, this is what an Atlantic Salmon looks like. Click through for Mazda's account of the Cougar Ace's plight.

From Mazda Motor Corp:

The Cougar Ace sailed from Japan to North America with just over 4,700 Canadian- and U.S-bound Mazdas aboard. She became stricken when an issue during a routine ballast-water change caused her to list. Thanks to heroic efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, all 23 crew members were transferred from the ship within hours.

After the ship was stabilized, she was towed by her owners to sheltered waters in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where she was returned to an even keel. She is currently under tow to the Port of Portland, Ore., where she is expected to arrive on September 12 (the same date in local time). Upon arrival, her cargo will be further evaluated and unloaded.

Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

Anyone want to buy one of those cars?

Guess it all depends on the extent of the damage, how much, and if they decide to totally void the warranties....

I can already smell a rat...just imagine being told by the salesman that the "used" 2007 model year car that he's trying to push on you was only driven by a little old lady twice a week to the grocery store right next to her house, and that's why the car only has 10 miles on the odometer...and that she died two months after she bought the car.

It seems to me that selling these cars as used is highly dishonest...they should be sold as salvage cars, not used. Selling them as used would denote that other than usual wear and tear they're in good shape...not that they were in a ship that listed during transit. They are posting the VIN numbers, but still...when you go car shopping, do you scour the internet looking for stories like this?

Well, I suppose it depends on how much damage they take. Legally a car wouldn't get a salvage title unless it was totalled and then rebuilt, right? So I'd imagine this would be similar, although the dealer's honesty would still be an issue - being honest about it taking *any* damage.

I would think that if they're going to cancel the factory warranty on them, they should be sold as salvage cars. By cancelling the factory warranty, they're saying that they aren't sure what effect being in a listed ship had on them, and they don't want to take any risks on having to cover repairs that could have been caused by the accident.

I would question what Mazda plans on doing as far as notifing the people who buy these cars. Will they require the dealership to inform potential buyers that the car was in a ship that listed in transit, or will they send you a notice in the mail that your car's warranty is invalid because of a shipping accident, and that its your problem and you should've researched before buying? Let me put it like this...what if you found out three months after buying your Focus that it had been in a similar accident, and that the warranty you thought the car came with when you bought it is invalid?
