Unhappy non Focus content: my wife crashed the Subaru

Wow, my wife was cruising around a bend, got onto about 1/4" of wet leaves covering the road, and lifted off the throttle in a bit of panic (one should not ever lift fully off the throttle when one begins to slide in a manual-gearbox all-wheel-drive vehicle, instead one should feather it off to maintain control...).

She says she was going about 30 "or so". If you can't see from the picture, the mailbox was entrenched in a cement post and painted bright yellow.

I'm bummed. To my eye it's mostly cosmetic, except for that right front tire leaning inwards. Both airbags went off (my 13 year old daughter was in the front passenger seat).

Daughter has a stiff hand and sore wrist, but is otherwise fine. I'm just venting here because we're moving to a new house in 8 days... I sure don't need this right now...

I'm sure you're giving thanks that your wife and daughter are OK. Still, what a bummer, and with a move coming too!

People can forget (NOT saying your wife did this!) that wet leaves can be like ice. It's one of the things I do remember from Driver's Ed, going out on a leafy side street in the rain and trying out some skids...

Too bad, glad everyones allright, but alot people get a false sense of security with awd, stability control etc...When it snows here 8 out 10 wrecks are awd/4wd cars/suvs.

Ah that sucks, man... even if it is all just body damage it's still going to be expensive, what with the deployed airbags.

Glad to hear everyone's alright, though.

Yep. And do note I posted that she was going 30 "or so". My wife tries to drive the wheels off that thing, the Forester is pretty scooty with all that low-end torque mated to the 5-speed. Takes the SVT off the line every time.. for about 2 seconds.

Up close, you can see that it was the right front corner of the car which caught the reinforced cement post, not the front of the bumper. It literally hooked the car around.

So the "crumple" section of the bumper assembly and frame rail was not involved in controlling the crash energy, it was all absorbed by the lighter sheetmetals of the fender and fender wall, and then finally the wheel/tire combination.

Ya, and we only owe about $2500 on it, would be paid off in a week or two after we settle in to the new house.

Hopefully it's fixable, we really like our Scooby. (And I'm surprised no one commented on the fakie license plate I slapped on there).

I'm going to bed. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

At least, if not more. I think the strut tower is bent, which means the front end took a really good whack.
